Yesterday I got half litre Breyer's ice cream, Light, Vanilla, from Loblaw. That was 40% less fat as on the label. Tasted different. When I saw the “nutritional values” and the content, I was surprised. Protein 1 gram per serving. I was a bit puzzled as even the skim milk contains decent amount of protein in it. When I saw the contents, first was “Modified milk products”. I have no clue what it is. Needless to say that I threw the box out.

"Low fat" and "light" ;products will have other fillers often wheat. They are more processed.
Also you will notice most cheaper ice creams are not actually cream, they are Milk based with other products in them.
Its healthier to go to baskin robbins or get haagen daaz. They use real cream so its higher fat, but its got less artificial ingredients in it.

I read labels like crazy. Are you aware there is less sugar in whole milk than skim milk? Its also lower in the GI. etc.

Yes, that is because "modified milk ingredients" are often just a catch-all term for a variety of dehydrated and processed forms of milk protein.
They comprise of dehydrated whey protein, casein, caseinates, powdered whey, etc.
Very often they are imported from low-cost countries like China, which is why those products are missing the country of origin labels.
Most people will not buy ice cream that was "made in China" 6 months ago.
But that's exactly what modified milk ingredients do.
They have been pasteurized, processed, dehydrated and treated in several other ways to ensure long shelf life.

All those brand name block cheeses that you see in superstores like WalMart, Loblaws, etc. are all made out of modified milk ingredients.
There is no real cheese in them.

Commercial ice cream these days also contain a host of other interesting ingredients like soy, locust bean gum, corn starch, carrageenan, etc.

I saw a program on the food channel that the cheaper icecreams had more air in it so for same liter size box they weighed lesser then expensive ice cream.

From now on i eat the expensive ice cream in smaller amounts.

I always try to avoid any chineese products, but options are very limited. I never by any products which does not expiry date especially eatables, sometimes back i bought PC chincken meat balls and check the carton I could not find exipry/ manufature date. The customer service also unable to answer my question. yesterday I bought one vaseline from shoppers drug mart and noticed there is no expiry date/ date of manufature. just say imported by uniliver canada. i think it should be made in china. when I enqiured from customer service they could not answer my question. Is there any regulatary body to make complain find out answers?
