As far as I know, I pay a big amount of tax (Part of which is for healthcare) That is true, but if u see it practically, everybody here has to work and hence pay tax (Except children then u pay for child care). You can spend few months without work until your savings get diluted.

Web2000,
I think you should educate yourself on Canadian Healthcare system and this will also help the OP decide if to come to Canada or not , b'cos he will understand a goodie given by the Cdn Govt.
Canadian Govt. healthcare is FREE to all citizens. You may earn $0 a year or $100 Million in Canada and you still will have the same facilities extended to you on a first come , first serve basis. We donot have a 2 or 3 tier Healthcare system yet in Canada (It is slowly coming exp. in BC) where money can buy you better care or a sophisticated operation.
If you are not working or on welfare or low income of $9,000 a year or so, you pay no tax, no health tax etc... If you earn more than that you pay health tax (depends on your province) and general Tax. of course no Doctors / hospital works for free and hence the bill is paid by the govt. using tax dollars.
If you are a senior (and may be in low income group - CD's to confirm) or on welfare (Welfare means that you canot find work and the Govt. will give you free money to support yourself) , your prescription drugs are FREE (with $2 handling fee which is paid by many pharmacy themselves). So you can take Multi million dollar drugs for diseases and all COST is paid by the Govt.,
This is the only country (and may be UK) where Stephen Harper (the PM) and you could be operated by the same doctors a triple by pass surgery and eat the same Hospital food and lie on beds in the same ward.
So it is a great system.
However, I will agree with Web2000 about the shortcomings like the underfundedness, shortage of doctors/ nurses etc... But with all these things FREE and COMMON to 33 million residents we have to understand.
India too has free healthcare like Canada but it is grossly misused. Govt. Doctors spend an hour in the hospital (rest for Private practice), steal medicines / surgery equipments, donot perform surgery etc. Besides we have a 2 tire system there.
Also what is NOT FREE is the prescription drugs (unless you are a senior or on Welfare). you have either to pay for your medicines (Not while you are being treated in Hospitals) or have a extended health coverage (you can buy it on your own or the company that you work for will give it to you as long as you work for them). Even then terms vary. You either get it all free or pay $5 per prescription or 20% of the total cost or only the dispensing fee . It depends on the plan. Also you canot get OTC (over the counter medications like crocin , burnol etc...) through your extended health coverage. You have to pay for it from your own pocket.

So theoretically, we have a free healthcare which does not work practically.

You agree yourself that it is free healthcare and it does work practically as I have mentioned above.

Hope this clears the air of the misconceptions of Canadian healthcare and restores balance.

Peace by TK

Then, I should say that healthcare system is not free for the middle class/upper middle class or rich people.

According to 80-20 rule, 80% of the people are already paying significant amount of tax to get healthcare services. There are only 20% people (Very poor or old citizens) who get some healthcare services for free.

So this is not FREE for 33 million people (May be free for few million)

Here if the Govt takes money in form of Taxes , it returns it back in the form of public services ... unlike India where the bulk goes into the pockets of politicians and bureaucrats . I wonder if it snowed in India , would Govt get the snow removed ? As it gets the garbage cleaned ...... :) .. Just for jest folks .....

I'll tell you what I've been telling people for a long time now...put one billion people in Canada and then you'll find out what the Canadian government can or cannot do as an administrative team.

It's takes more than snow removing when you have to run the world's largest democracy.

Hi Iknownothing,
How does the Chinese government manage to keep the country so clean even with its 1.3 billion population?
I am only speaking about the clean-country aspect. My neighbourhood has garbage collectors coming, collecting garbage ... and then dumping them into a nearby empty plot of land.
Repeated complaints to the Municipal Corporation has had no effects. (I am thinking of making a video and sending it to them.)

Well, the thread started with something with dipind asking the members about his situation and seeking advise.

It has now moved to some other way, where people I think are taking it personally and trying to justify their own point or picking up things or commenting on each and every line.

What TK did was that he was giving advice and say if you are writing more than 1000 words and explaining things, it might be that some things are written extra or the language is not perfect. Ofcourse, it is not a english writing competition that we need to put points in order, choose the words after lot of thinking. The thoughts are coming as advice, let it go free and if minor things can be ignored.

So, TK I think you should keep up the good work of guiding new comers to Canada. I have seen your various posts and found them quite infomative. We all should not pin point the things on each and every point. Rather if you see the whole post in totality, I really believe that what he projected was really good thing.

TK, keep up the good work that you have been doing!!!

PS: This post of mine may have some errors or some words might not sound good to some users, but again there are no bad feelings for anyone. We all are to exchange information and help each other.
