Offlate the Srilankan Tamils have been in news for various reasons. Eventhough their repeated protests is not getting them anywhere, it is giving a negative publicity to the word Tamil(s) in Canada.

The following events offlate is creating problems to other tamils and in times to come the word Tamil will be equated to Trouble.

This is already having ripple effects in the job market where potential employers are looking at word tamil as trouble makers.


1.The Canadian Tamils who were returning from White USA, where detained at the Canadian border for 7 hours and thoroughly checked before let in.

2.There is a alleged report that one of the LTTE pilots who did the 9-11 type Kamikaze plane suicide crashing in Srilanka last month was a Tamil Canadian from Canada, who was supposedly trained in flying in Canada and also had canvassed for an tamil MPP candidate in Markham-Scarborough area.

3.It is alleged by independant news analyst that more than 50% of the USD 1 Billion Dollar Cocaine trade in Vancouver area is controlled by LTTE supported tamils. The supply routes is controlled by LTTE, while the street distribution is done by other cultures. A good example for multiculturism.

4.MP Gurbax Malhi the liberal MP who attended one of the meetings in Ottawa rally now is distancing himself from this meeting. Todays Mississauga News.

in your opinion do canadian employers know that there is a marked difference between Tamil Nadu Tamils (who live in India) and the Sri lankan tamils?
There was a very small company that I worked in before which was headed by an Italian. In the past conversations that I had with him, all that he knew were the words Indian and Sri lankan.
However, I am pretty sure that there will be other employers who would fall under that catagory that you mentioned.
When I first landed in 2002 and was working in a factory with some Sri Lankan Tamils , some of them told me that most people feared them (esp. in Scarborough). Hope this does not spread towards the other Western parts of Scarborough (GTA in General)

I do see a lot of Tamil protests in street corners at busy intersections in GTA, especially in Scarborough.

1) The question is, how effective are they and what purpose do they serve?

The governments in Canada, US, India etc have basically distanced themselves from the tamil protests and maintained a studied silence.

As much as i sympatise with the civilians caught in the warzone and hope they are freed and fed, peace can only come to Sri Lanka in the complete absence of LTTE.
