Hi Guys,

I was living in Windsor as PR and daily commuting to Detroit for more than 3 years. After completing 1095 days in Canada, I applied for the Canadian Citizenship in May 2008.

I got my US Green Card in June 2008 and I moved to USA from Canada in July 2008.

I completed my Canadian Citizenship Written Test in January 2009.

Now I got a letter from CIC, Windsor to provide more information in Residence Questionnaire “Form CIT 0171” so that citizenship judge can determine whether I meet the residence requirements. And it asks so many things, like my absence from Canada, my employment in Canada (which I did not have) etc. They also need the photocopies of all the pages of my current and old passport.

I am still maintaining one Canadian Address for CIC mail purposes (my friend’s one).

What should I do now? Is there any chance that I may get smooth sailing to Canadian Citizenship after submitting the information or it is otherwise?

Please advice.

Thanks,
Anurag

I do not think there SHOULD be any issue as long as you have fulfilled all the requirements for the cdn citizenship. The fulfillment of the physical presence is very important. Now, The reason I have used the capital letters above is that your case is with the judge and it is up to the judge to decide based on your complete residency scenario (which we do not know).

The citizenship law never states that you should have an intention to reside in canada after your citizenship - so leaving Canada after applying is okay. The judge might question your US PR status though and make a decision based on that. (The positive side is that you became a US PR after applying for cdn citizenship).

The things that could go against you are: Your US employment (commute) that could be viewed as your intention to not make Canada your home and then your US PR (based on your US employment?).

Good luck!

Thanks cdn_dude

Should I mention to CIC about my present staying in USA on Green Card, or I should mention them only that I have completed 1095 days of staying in Canada before applying citizenship?

They are also asking my home and family ties along with my employment ties in Canada. As of now, I have neither a family member or home, nor I had any employment in Canada. Any idea on how to handle this situation?

Also they sent me an envelop to mail them my documents. But that envelope is smaller for the documents that I am planning to send them. So my question is that Can I use some other envelope to send them my documents or I should send them only in the same envelope that they sent me.

Thanks in advance

You should answer all the questions truthfully. Remember, you are under no obligation to volunteer the information that is not asked.

I do not think using the envelope other than the one they have provided will go against you.

What should I fill for "Application ID" in Residence Questionnaire?

Is it supposed to be filled by myself or by CIC.

And for the supporting documents, I have lined up most of the documents to prove my 1095 days stay in Canada, except the health records.

I called my clinic and they are asking me to come personally and pay $1/page for health record. They won't take the fax authorization and credit card payment. How risky it would be not to submit the health records.

I got the following documents:
• Apartment Lease copy, letter from apartment manager and apartment communications
• Monthly Bank and Credit Card Statements to show various expenses and purchases
• CRA Notice of Assessments for year 2007, 2006, 2005 (2008 tax filing is in process)
• Issuance and renewal of Passport from Indian Consulate in Toronto
• Car Import documents for Cadillac Catera and Honda Odyssey and their registration in Ontario
• License plate renewal and other documents from Ontario Ministry of Transportation
• Car and Apartment Insurance monthly statements from Statefarm
• Monthly Bill statements from Bell Canada and Cogeco Cable company
• Kids School Report Card and payment details for their other extracurricular activities

Thanks,
Anurag

hi Anurag,

What is the status of your citizenship? Did you hear anything? I got the same form. But I work and live in Canada.

Thanks,

Sajjad

it is surprising to note that people were smart enough to manage PR from Canada and Green Card from US and looking for citizenship from Canada and later from US too, still do not know how to respond to CIC letter.

God bless them!
