Check on carfax the current owner of the car

Used Vehicle Information Package - UVIP
Every owner who wants to sell his car in private should have this.. if he does not the sale cannot be done..
If the UVIP owner does not match the info on the Carfax then it could be fraud stay away.

Mileage should be close to last registration, otherwise chances of odometer rollback.

Get the seller to do Safety and Emission before u say yes on no
Safety is mandatory
Emission is required for alternate years depending on year of make.. so this may or may not be required depending on the year of car. but doing emission will give u peace of mind about the car.
5> Get copy of the sellers drivers license, verify owner/signature against UVIP and registration papers
6> If every thing is ok get owner to sign Bill of Sale part of UVIP and Pay only by bankers cheque
7> go to MTO and pay 8% gst and register.. The car is urs.. The seller is not required at this stage..
Private sale usually saves on PST...
No owner will sign the bill of sale without getting the money..
Rarely will owners agree to stay with at the MTO until transfer is done and in my opinion is not required if u do all the verification..
Most private sellers are ordinary people.. so u will know a scam when a sales man is making a pitch..
At the end of the deal drop off the person to his home that way u know where he lives..
Besides the DL , a phone number is a good reference to note .
A general opinion when buying a pre owned vehicle here is to pay slightly more up front towards buying a car which needs less/ no repair rather than buying a cheaper car which needs repairs ~ its difficult to assess initially how much the repairs would effectively cost -- better to buy something which does not seem to be needing any repairs even if it comes at 2 grands more .

Correct me if I am wrong - I thought emissin test is required WHENEVER one wants to sell a used car - unless the last emission test report is still valid, which I think is 3 months.

And I thought on private sale you pay PST (the seller) - while if you are doing a trade in, you save it since one is set off against other.
Is my understanding wrong??
Thanks all, we have almost finalized a van.
Q. From this link, which report should we order if we want to order one, ....UVIP ? Seller does not have UVIP. Or we should go with car fax report ? which is more reliable and is it same information in both ?

Thanks.
Ashu
The seller should have the UVIP (it is the law).. ask him to get it..
Private sale cannot be done without uvip ..
Buyer cannot get uvip nor should he have to pay.. something is fishy here if the owner has not got the uvip
