Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore figure in Business Week's "The World's Worst Places to Work". Looks like BW took only the developing economies into consideration to come up with the list.

Here's the link to the slide show

Yeah, it's selected from developing countries.
However, the selections are rather uneven in terms of commercialization and internationalization of the cities.
For example, Mumbai is way more international and industralized than say Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
It is not fair to compare the two and rank them side-by-side.
Similarly New Delhi or Lagos vis-a-vis some of the smaller Chinese cities or a couple of cities in Central Asia - not the same scale for comparison.

But I tend to agree with their conclusions around the 4 Indian cities profiled.
New Delhi is a mess these days - impossible to get around at all.

Its a rotten shame to call Indian cities "worst" places to work. It almost takes away from the superlative's impact to convey the meaning of downright hopelessness. Really, if Bangalore is the worst place to work, that's just fan-bloody-tastic to tell you the truth. The world ain't that bad a place I guess.

I have always wondered the kind of panel that comes up with these kinds of lists - "best of", "worst of" - relative to what?

Whatever...

IMO, its an article written by a bigot. I am from Bangalore and I dont know from where Businessweek got that picture. I doubt its Bangalore. Why are they showing those pictures from India? There are thousands of whites working and living in Bangalore and other Indian citieis mentioned in the article. Another India bashing article by a bigot.

I think you are getting upset and defensive too much.
It's not an India bashing article - they are reviewed many cities from around the world and quite a few of them have gotten worse reviews than the Indian cities.

I do, however, find it biased that they chose to review only developing countries and not so-called developed countries.
I'm sure there are cities in "developed" countries that are worse places to work than Banglore or whatever.

I can't speak for Banglore but their assessment of New Delhi is quite correct.
I was there recently and it is indeed a mess.
New Delhi as our national capital has been steadily deteriorating for over a decade now.
Traffic is getting worse and so is pollution.
Crime is increasing.
The city is explanding in an unplanned and unruly fashion.
There is no maintenance and upkeep of our national monuments like Jantar Mantar, Red Fort, Qutub Minar, etc.
I grew up in Delhi and it has changed so much for the worse that I feel bad.

When was the last time you were in New Delhi? I was there in Dec 2007 and gone to all the places you have mentioned. Looks just ifne and they have been taken care. If you think that a city should not change, I dont know what else to say.
Did you know that there are thousands of whites work/live in Delhi? If it was so bad as mentioned in the article, they would have gone back.

I was in Delhi in Dec 2008 and frankly the city is a mess!!!! There has been development ... if you call building roads that .... but the congestion and traffic jam is just unbearable.

Though i have never been to Riyadh ..... have heard a lot about the place so am surprised to find that place in this list. To be honest each of the Indian cities deserves to bo on the list. But then the fact of the matter is that they do lack infrastructure and a lot of that is because of government policies.

On another note .... this time i was in Delhi and the first time i went out on the road to drive ... as usual i stopped on the "first" red light ...... my wife's comment was " you are the only fool who stopped on the red light" .... so it took a few mintues before the "delhi driving" habits kicked and i was good for rest of the time !!!!! Love Delhi though inspite of its mess !!!!!!
