Hello to all fellow desis

My sister in law is moving to Canada after completing her MSC in Maths.

My question is what are the best career options available in current environment?

Any comment or suggestions?

I want to give you practical advice. Unlike many of us, I have a practical feel for the actuality in the market place as I get to interact with lot of people on the ground.

The good news is that you are degree holder in Math. From the name I gather(I may be wrong) that you are from Punjab ?..

I have a few friends who have come with similar background as you and some have made it, while others are still stuck in the rut(this actually happened in a punjabi hindu family in Brampton where two sister in laws with M.Sc from Punjab one in chemistry while the other from math tried, and one in Math made it). The difference was the once who made it, made the right moves while the other continued in the rut.

Do not listen to the regular Desi advice that it is too difficult and you'll not make it.

Any day the teaching career is the best for anybody in Canada. The reason is that you are protected by an union and you have a set working hours, you have optional summers off and quite a relaxed life. This does not include the tense situation which would arise from your day to day interaction with raging teens on testosterone/estrogen.A good math teacher in high school in peel region with 5 to 7 years can any place from 40K to 80K per annum.

1.You need to have to demonstrate that you have had teaching experience before.

2.You need to go for the local teaching course in the local university which is a 2 year program.

3.You need to work as a supply teacher(that means you are on the call and if a teacher is absent they will call you in the morning and you need to fill in for her that day).

4.A local principal of a school where you worked need to support you for getting a permanent spot.

5.More and more Asians are getting in to teach sciences, math and technical subjects in high schools as the locals are typically getting out of it and get into social studies type of education.

6.The people who got into good positions in Brampton/Toronto where one's who quickly changed their accents, dressing to western style with western hair dressing. While the one's with traditional Indian identity who could not network with the Principals are still stuck with supply positions while the one's who changed their appearance/communication(NOT THEIR CULTURAL VALUES) have progressed.

Typically you'll hear it is difficult to get an entry into the teaching profession. I have an answer for you on this road block. There is an Indian of Telugu origin, who incidentally has her own telugu bharathi program on CMR 101.3 FM on Saturday 9.00AM, her own telugu bharathi TV program on Vision TV channel 60 on Saturdays at 5.00PM is a Principal of Floredale elementary school in Mississauga. She came to Canada from ME a few years ago and she has made it. If you would have seen her you'll be amazed the way she can switch from a Desi to a Gora and back again.

That is the difference between sucessful people and failures.

Hence the plan of action for you and your sister in law is as follows:

1.Try to use your local connection, actual desi teachers on the job to find out about how they did it and also for names/actual decision makers.

2.Try to find about the university program for the Teachers training program. I gather it has a waiting period of about 1 year before admission.

3.Try to find out more dope on about the supply teacher program.

4.Try to learn about other provinces like Saskatechvan for teacher positions if this could be an option for your brother and sisterinlaw.

Good Luck !.
