Total price: 365*2 + 250 (Taxes) = ~$1000 USD
Still a good price, but not nearly as good as it looks as first glance.
Taxes+Airport fees(very high for Pearson, for example) + fewer flight options = Higher prices
As per Alex's calculation = 1000 USD = 1,255.87 CAD. I paid $1280 (return) for my India visit last month, via. Beijing - Air China (Vancouver to India).
So, low price in US??? Not really!

In Feb. 09, My parents paid Rs 51,200 for a return flight ticket Chennai-Brussels- New York -raleigh Nc by Jet Airways. At that time 1 USD was around Rs 49.
So the fares are just a marketing technique and nothing else.
I am sure that with Oil at $ 48 a barrel now, you can even get more cheap prices.
