but close on the US side would also be ok (within 3 - 4 hrs. of driving from GTA).

You could try the following:

* 1000 islands
* Water Safari Enchanted Forest - It's a water park in the US, about 6 hrs drive from TO --> http://www.watersafari.com/
* Darien Lake, Theme Park, USA - about 2.5 hrs from TO --> http://www.godarienlake.com/home.aspx

There are a lot more places in Northern Ontario.

Personally We've visited the Water Safari. We had a package deal with the hotel right across the park, which included stay and play. If you enter the park after 3pm, the next day entry is free. Since the hotel was right cross the park, it was very convenient.

I can't remember the name of the place does anyone know?

But that's probably not fit your criteria because of the long drive, but an option...
