Hello Guys,

I have extended warranty on my car which is about to end in few weeks. Many major repairs are covered under the warranty. I want to take benefit of it before it gets over and have the dealer change any parts I am eligible for (parts needs to be changed).

What is the best thing to do:

1. Take my vehicle to the dealer and tell him the fact!
Some one told me that I can take my vehicle to the dealer and he will change as many parts he can, covered under warranty as he is making more money when he change any parts.

OR

2. Have it checked by other certified mechanic, get quotation of parts need to be changed and then go to dealer and request to change any part covered under warranty.

The car is 2003 model which I bought used from a dealer. I’ve spent money on warranty but due to less usage haven’t got any major repair yet so I want to take as much advantage of the warranty as I can before it gets over.

Please share your views.
Thanks in adv.

LOL, that's the thing with extended warranties - they tend to expire just when you start to need them :)

Don't do this - if it aint' broke, don't fix it.
Just to leverage the extended warranty, you might end up replacing parts that don't need to be.

This is probably better.
You can take it to a trusted certified mechanic or a dealer (not the one you bought the car and/or the extended warranty from) and have them do a thorough inspection of the vehicle, including transmission, brake system, tires, suspension, etc.
Don't tell them anything about the warranty, just get an inspection done and don't sign up for any work yet.
Then come back and decide what you want to get done, depending on what's covered and what's not.
Stuff like tires and other wear/tear items will most likely not be covered.

That is little tricky because when you don't understand technical terms. There will be another task where I'll have to understand certified mechanic's report and see what is covered and what is not.

Isn't it a better idea to tell him the truth so he knows what my requirement is? Otherwise he might not bother to tell me to replace things which theoretically I should but is good in my car. He is getting paid anyways for the report, why not to use his expertise in getting more? :)

If something is good, why would you replace it?
That's my point about if it aint' broke don't fix it.

Different parts/components wear out/break down at different points in different cars (varies from model year to model year and car instance to car instance even if everything is the same).

I would expect that if the mechanic is good and competent, he /should/ tell you if something is wearing down or breaking and needs to be fixed.
In fact, often the issue with mechanics is the exact opposite - that they wanna replace more rather than less.

The risk in telling him your real motivation is that he might want to replace more than necessary, knowing that you aren't paying out of pocket.

Extend your extended warranty further. Now you will need it.

What precautionary steps are required after warranty gets over is a different point, for now we are discussing how to leverage what I have.

They know what you need and when, so unfortunately you cannot extend it after certain years from the dealer.

What is the make/model/kms of the car? What is the repair history.

How much $ did you spend on the warranty?
How much $ worth of repair work did you do under warranty?
How much $ is extension of extended warranty?
