Hello, me and my family became PR in mid of 2008 and we returned after 1 month, then we did not apply for OHIP as we had to come back and we learned that if one is away from Canada for more than six month will again have to apply. However now my question is, when we return this august and apply, will it still take three (3) months waiting period or it will be faster, if so how much? So accordingly I consider taking private insurance for that period. I was not able to get exact information on the internet either. Only information i could get on OHIP site was this as below
{OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period.}
Appreciate all the feedback and thanks for your time to read this and reply
Wish you and your loved ones always have good health

Friends, after doing further research on Ontario Ministry of Health website I found the answer which is as below
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohipfaq_dt.html#3
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ohip/wait.html
[Generally speaking, if you are a newcomer to Ontario, or a former resident returning here to live after being out of the country for more than seven months, the waiting period begins on the date you establish or re-establish residence in Ontario. You may also be required to be present in Ontario for 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date residence is established in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence).]
Further to the above detail on the website a sample day calculation is also provided which clearly indicates 3 months waiting period.
So in short if a PR is returning after seven months or more will have to wait for 3 months to get the OHIP.
However there are exceptions like
1) New born babies,
2) OHIP-eligible adopted children under the age of 16;
3) People from another province/territory who move directly into a long-term care facility in Ontario, or
4) Who require admittance into a long-term care facility within 3 months of arrival in Ontario. etc,
For further details please explore the website, yes will have to spend some time reading all subjects and topics based on your specific queries.
Wish you all a good health and happy summer time.
