But please remember one thing. An individual can't get very far in this world if he has a "go f#$% yourself" attitude. Sometimes, no matter the talent, attitude is everything. I am sure you know...just wanted to mention.

As I said, I will be back with a list...

Really appreciate your comments.

1. Kid scores well in every subject but is most attracted to the numerate sciences/fields.

2. Aye, the attitude IS everything. I was looking at it more from the perspective of a chap working in (say) Nortel, now having to look for a job. Atleast with a CA or LLB, the kid can hang out his own shingle.

Being an Architect is documented as being the sexiest and top profession in NA.

This is an area where we're a little confused. Our impression is that

1. most of the architectural work is done by a large architectural firm for a large builder.
2. therefore the scope for an independent practise would be limited and an architectural job is really very similar to a corporate job like in a bank.

Would appreciate some more details on the work/career of an architect from an insiders perspective, especially from the view of setting up an independent practise.

Have you folks considered a career in Actuary?

This field needs a lot of math and statistics as background. Additionally, he may need to take business and finance courses as well. There is a professional certification in this field but not sure if it is mandatory for an actuary to practice his/her trade. However, it lays a good foundation for CA, Law, MBA and other graduate programs.

Also, I am not sure if independent practice is prevalent in this field.

Of course, where licensure is concerned, Law is the most shameless of all professions in terms of protecting their interests. They will do anything in order to screw anybody who is not a lawyer. Power, money, greed, legalized extortion etc. Can't go wrong there. :D :D

The good news being, many licensure programs are graduate level programs. So undergraduate program can be made flexible(personal likes + foundational requirements for professional studies).

NewBoyo,
Contrary to what you think Architecture is the mother of all arts and Architects are at the top of the chain. The client decides the Architect and everyone else is chosen by him and hence will be answerable to the Architect. (the thing that you heard that an Architect is hired by the builder is totally wrong and is true only that a designer is hired by the builder to do houses).
The steps are as follows :
1. Your son studies the course for 5 years.
2. He works in a very low paying job (as an Architecture trainee for a few years)
3. he learns all the tricks of the trade (practical)
4. He completes his licencing and is promoted to be an Architect (say after 2-3 years). If he is very clever and talented he can even start earlier.
5. He gets his own clients / opens his firm and then sky is the limit.

An Architect earns a lot esp. if he is very talented and can do good designs and is business minded. However, if your son has no inlination towards arts and is not that buisiness minded, this is a profession that HE MUST NOT enter as it can mess up his life. Therefore, it is one of the best professions for people who have got creativity and talent and not for the mugging type people or even hard working people.

Peace

Wow. Did not know muggers chose architecture as profession, when you can make same amount of money just by robbing people at gun/knife point :p

If I were to think at this "time" of something ...

Think of a job related to "environment" - they have just started coming in & I dont think they are going out in hurry.

Other choices -

Medicine is definitely not going out of business. But as Medicine is his not chosen option ... Other than that not going out of fashion is "Crime Related". Not necessarily Uniformed Police but it could be Forensic Investigator. You'll have plenty of choices & specialization under this Huge Umbrella.
