Many a times I find people asking here what are the opportunities for school teachers in PEEL and Toronto school boards.
I want to reveal the dirt under the floor of what is going on.
This is an open secret and check with your teacher friends.
The ugly truth:
1.Enrollment in schools is falling and many a schools in Mississuaga and Toronto are up for closure.
2.Many a students are dropping out after high schools and ONLY the Asian Immigrants(Chinese, Indian, Pakistan and few ) are fuelling the rat race for higher education(College, University).
3.Even after getting a bachelor degree from Mcmaster or UFT many a kids are not able to find jobs and taking up basic jobs like retail store clerk working for 20 to 24 hours at minimum wage. They carry OSAP loans of 50 to 60K and are staying with parents and are unable to move out.
4.There is absolutely no respect for teachers in high school and smoking and use of recreational drugs are happening in the presence of the teachers. If the teacher makes a case against the student on discipline he is either reprimanded by the Principal or when the case goes to the board the board typically takes the side of the parents and hence the teachers do not want to stick out their necks.
5.For every position advertised there are atleast 250 applicants for a newer teaching position. Hence they do not even go through the applications/data base and they pick only people recommended by principals or board members for interviews. Many a times people who have economics degree end up selected to teach Biology for 11th grade. It is very important who knows you than whom you know.
6.In the case of teachers they start with a union membership and a starting salary of 48K to 50 K and after about 10 years they reach the current maximum of 81K. They also teach summer schools and night schools. While there are plenty of teacher graduating with OCE and ready to teach they are being denied for lack of experience. This might be your son/daughter with Canadian education in some years from now. While the teachers retire they take 75% pension which is around 60K. Even after this they are so greedy they use their connections and come back as supply teachers at 200 bucks per day. Hence how will you let a new kid with a OCE to get into teaching or even experience?.
Now my main take on this subject:
You have a whole cycle of garbage being made. Uninterested students who want to drop out and take up jobs in Nofrills or LOBLAWS being taught by teachers who have got through recommendation without real merit and who do not want take any disciplinary action for the fear of reprimand. We have mainly immigrants children landing here at grades 10 and 11 with good education background from Asia pushing the grades up due to excellent math skills and your kids ending up doing traditional education and while they end taking up the coveted university slots. They do not want to venture into new fields.Hence employers need to import qualified immigrants on work permit to do this job.
Now you'll find three cycles running parallely and they do not meet.
Which cycle is your kid in?.

Sunny Leone a true Canadian DESI now back in India !.
Schooling, or lack thereof, was one of the primary reasons why we are going back to India. From grade 1 to grade 12, Bangalore has vastly superior education system. The same years here, are a total joke.
I am sure there are oodles of students doing well and one can spare me the cliche that those who do well, will perform well no matter where they are. I know that. Regardless, I suspect the OP is on the mark...

Embrace Canada as it is (if you want to make your life here) and if you find a fault in a system, do your best to fix it or improve it if you can.
Or - make the best of both worlds .... educate children in India and once you have "educated" them , you can get them back here or anywhere else .... Education is better back home and one needs a strong back ground to stay professionally abreast any where in the world ...

Freakoutguy -
You are correct. My comparison was off-base.
But in Bangalore, you don't have to go expensive private schools to get the best education. In fact that is hardly a measure. I was trying to get that across actually...

Even if one were to take the OP's comments about the education system, they are more reflective of the public school system (which is FREE). The school that your kid lands in depends totally on the area you live in. If you stay in the so called "affluent"neighbourhoods that boast of million dollar homes, you will have access to the best public schools. The OP's comments are more reflective of some of the ïnner city"neighbourhoods and are not representative of the system as a whole.
Comparing education in Toronto and Bangalore is like comparing apples to oranges. On one hand you are comparing the "worst" of Toronto public schools(free) to elite private schools in Bangalore or anywhere else in India. I have friends and colleagues who send their kids to private schools in Toronto and it ranges from $6000/year to $30,0000/year. That would be a more apt comparator between the two systems.
