I agree with fido in this regard.

Dear vivek,
you came all the way to west and take the advantage of the turmp card "Citizenship" and move back or go to any country where you might have been crazy. I mean you roam around and see the countries while you are searching for good paid and self satisfying job.
I believe that gives first hand experience that you just had in canada and also seen the world (where lot of people dont get this opportunity).
then decide to settle down the place you best fit into..may be in india or may be in florida or may be in toronto...
I hope you dont take decision on frustation or homesick mood..give some time as you sounds to be young and energetic..

On citizenship:

1. depends on how important it is for you.

So, 1-2 years on average to get a decent job and stability. 1 year waiting to be eligible for citizenship. 1-2 years in the citizenship process. If you travel frequently, more delays are possible.

5 years of life gone. Some may say well worth it some may not.

2. I do not believe it will help you get a job in India if you are a Canadian citizen.India has advanced a lot beyond that foreign craze, IMO.

It does not even give an advantage in Canada, except federal government jobs.

To work in USA, you would need to get TN visa. Of course it can be done, but then after 5 years here, you are looking to relocate again to a new country, and work there as a NON CITIZEN.

Again, it is a matter of choice. What do you value, and what are you willing to sacrifice.

What are the advantages of citizenship if you go back to India after spending 4 years of doing odd jobs in Canada? India has changed a lot, nobody cares your country of citizenship - what they care for is your western work experience. If you do not have that, those years are wasted. Also, you are at risk of losing the chances of entry back to your profession because of this waste of time.

You said it.

For someone who has not worked in their field for four years, it will be next to impossible for them to go back to what they were doing...ever.

And you are right, India has changed so much. The corporate world is booming there. I know a lot of people who wouldn't want to come to the US, leave aside Canada, which is usually a second choice for most of the people.

I have seen a lot of people saying they want to stay here for their kids' future. I don't get it. How can 'struggling' in Canada guarantee a good life for the future generation. If the child has it in him/her, they will probably make a good life anywhere on the planet. Whats the point sacrificing your entire life.

Moreover, I've seen most of the people aren't even ready and equipped to adapt the Western life. Linguistic skills being the primary reason. Some of the posts here make me wonder if the expectations these people have with those linguistic skills and lack of common sense (there was recently a post where someone was wondering what to do with the medication that has gone bad), are even realistic. No offense to the OP or any one else, but they are bound to fall flat on their faces. And a lot of them do.

I don't expect myself to excel in the french fashion world for the simple reason that I don't speak the language of the land and I don't have it in me. One needs to make this judgment before they call a new country their home.

There are lots of advantages .. I will cite the ones that come to my mind right now and will add on more later ..

1. You don't know what India is like in 10 yrs and you don't know if you d wish to come back to Canada . Citizenship assures that .

2. You learn a lot here as well .. on the job and off it ........ better morals / values / traffic sense / civic sense .. just to name a few ... they make you a better human being where ever you go .... this is an asset .

3. Western experience is recognized for the above point wherever you go .... you find plumbers from the UK in the ME working as Sanitation Engineers :) .

4. Try to gather a diploma / degree from here which can add feathers to your resume ... This will benefit you immensely when you return back home as education from abroad is valued .

5. Chances are that in these 3-4 years , you may not stay in odd jobs , get to a better job , evolve with time and be in a better position to decide .

6. Your parents would not stay with you forever ... but your immediate family will ... much longer and you do have your responsibility towards them as well ...

7. If you ever decide to move to the Middle East ( I feel the same of other places as well ) a Western Passport places you in a different negotiating position all together .

To me , getting a Canadian citizenship is a win win situation . You can always decide upon your future course of action thereafter .

PS : I do agree that being 4 yrs out of a career can put you behind in the race but not out ... and I also believe that one can make up for these lost years by galloping later professionally with a single minded state of knowing that you have experienced and decided rather then being at unrest ..

just as you say you grew up the west changed..so has life in India..it has become modern and fast paced too. there are so many pros and cons it is definately a hard decision.

ask yourself have you tried enough in this place to say that you are frustrated with it..or is it more that you do not really want to try and you wish to have the life you had before. in that case your choice is clear.

I would say that give yourself a bit more time before you make the decision..knowing full well that if things dont work out you are flexible enough to go back to where you were in India. That will give you motivation to proceed. Life can be lonely here, try to make the most of where you are when you are there.
