Guys,

When I see a collisions on road, there is always a tow truck waiting(sometime even before police). curious how towing works?

(I’ll use CAA as example)

1. If person has membership with CAA and is involved in collision, does he need to call them to send tow truck at place or CAA will reimburse charges later?

2. If he is at-fault, does he responsible to move all vehicles evolved?

3. What if vehicle is on the road/hwy and needs to be moved ASAP, Doesn’t police instruct who ever (tow truck) is at site to move it? Who pays for that?

4. Any other tips/do’s-don’ts

Thanks

•DO NOT move your vehicle unless Police officer asks you to do so.

•Do not fight or argue with the owner of other vehicle involved in the accident.

•If damage to your/ other vehicle is serious, immediately call police and an ambulance ( if someone got injured)

•Make a note ( if you can) of all events/ conditions leading to the accidents, as Police Officer will interview all drivers involved in the accident.

•In any case you are not responsible for towing charges of other vehicle. Normally towing charges are paid by the vehicle Owner’s insurance company (at fault or not at fault). If you have third party insurance coverage and you are at fault than you will be responsible of getting your vehicle towed though your insurance company will pay towing charges to other driver for getting their vehicle towed.

•You don’t have to pay towing charges upfront; Tow Company will charge your insurance company.

•Your insurance company will pay you to get your vehicle repaired and after getting police report insurance companies will settle the claim among themselves, you don’t have to worry about it.

When does this apply and when does it not apply ... if we are on a busy road / intersection and the damage is minor , should we not move the cars on the side , till the Police arrives -- or can't we exchange information and report to the collision center ?

If its a major crash then obviously one needs to call the Police but do things change if its not a major crash ....

I think the first thing one should do is take pictures from all angles and try and get phone no.s of witnesses ......... I am sorry the thread was for towing truck ... sorry for the minor digression but this could be helpful for all ... You never know when you are involved in a crash ...

Yeah you are right, for minor accident you dont have to call police.

If accident is minor (<1000) but there is confusion on who is at fault, does police get involved?

If not, who and how decides who is at fault? (sometime pictures cannot do justice)

Well in this case I would call police and let Officer decide or suggest next course of action.

If the damage is substantial , you need to call 911. They will prepare the report and give you the number. You have to do your best to make it clear whose fault it was and they will review the situation and report accordingly. The Insurance companies will decide the fault allocation based on this report. The claims department have special adjudicators to this purpose. If there is a dispute between the 2 insurance companies, they will handle it via thier own protocol.

I have heard once the case goes to insurance claims dept., it is decided based on documents - i.e. the police or collision center report and the pictures. To prove your pint you need to have the relevant pictures and note them on the report.

BTW, if you are CAA member, you can call them directly and they will come for towing your own car. If another tow truck approaches, please refuse and be firm. Many people have not very pleasant experience with tow truck drivers anyways. The other persons car is his/her problem and any costs involved will be handled by insurance claims department.

The most important thing is not to enter into any argument with any agency and deal with it calmly (easier said than done).

Good luck.
Hiren
