Hi All,

Can anybody tell me Where to buy some basic need things? Like bread, milk, curd etc I mean daily need stuff? Are there groceries near to residential area? Are they reasonable? Or we have to go to Indian market as mentioned in some previous posts. What is the Diff between Canadian market & Indian market? Where do all desis prefer?

I read 1 old post. What R the Precautions that a new immigrant should take while shopping??

Can someone tell us::

1. how are canadian stores/shops different from desi Indian markets/shops??

2. What are the precautions that a new immigrant should take when purchasing things in Canada??

Plz tell us.

In Ontario we have chain of some big grocery stores such as Price Chopper, Food Basics ( cheaper one), Longo’s, Fortinos, Loblaws, etc. On all stores prices are very competitive and reasonable. Longo’s is famous for fresh produce stuff. All these stores carry very selected South East Asian foodstuff only. So for East Indian food stuff you will have to visit East Indian stores and to get best price you will have to do some research.

Being a new immigrant I don't think that you have to take any extra precaution.

Regarding grocery items, one item Price Chopper would be selling at a cheaper rate, one item Food Basic might be selling at a cheaper rate, and one item indian stores selling at a cheaper rate and so on. The difference could be 10-20 cents to a dollar or more. You require car and time to find out.

For the first couple of weeks check out the free papers. Im not sure about elsewhere but in Mississauga, you get flyers and papers delivered about twice a week. These have weekly specials that you might find useful.

Also as raj stated things are competitively priced everywhere. Make a list of all the things you use and need to replenish on a weekly basis. Target a few stores close to your residence (Price Chopper, No Frills, Dominion, etc) ... make a note of the prices, in a few weeks you should have a customized list of all the things you should buy at each store.

Also: you dont want to be penny wise, pound foolish ... so act accordingly. Spending $4 on a return bus ticket to go get a bag of milk .10c cheaper somewhere might not be the best money saving technique.

And again, dont underestimate the flyers. Use them as your best resource.

There are convenience stores and "Hasty Markets" located in the middle of residential areas. As a personal opinion, I would suggest not to shop there as their prices are inflated and the quality of goods might be questionable. Within a reasonable walking distance you should be able to find a No Frills or other grocery store.
