I came to Canada some 45 years ago as a young person.Noe I am retired ,live a comfortable life. The rewards of being in Canada have been immense.

-- Conditions have changed since last 45 years - especially in India - because of the IT industry and the multinational companies. You cannot compare the current immigration with what it was a few decades ago.

When I browse through the internet, there is intense dislike (a less painful word for hatred), for south Asians, especially those from India and Pakistan. A lot of the hatred stems out of their racism, and the "holier than thou" attitude. Some of it comes out what we perceive to be "rightful actions".

I write about those who come to Canada, live here for three years, get their citizenship, and go back. Legally speaking, is that wrong? No. Morally and ethically is that right. I don't think so, because it defeats the very spirit of immigration, which would mean settling down in a different country because of the higher standards of life. What upsets me is the rank arrogance of some who call themselves "free birds", as if they were prisoners until they got their citizenship.

Why do I consider this act unethical and immoral?

1. It defeats the purpose of immigration, makes our community look like losers, and defeatists. The act itself is drenched in selfishness. Now self preservation is an instinct, but this is rank selfishness. Now if you say "I couldn't care less", I have nothing to show but pity on those souls.

I however commend those who actually spent three years here instead of "making it up", as some have.

2. Let us also remember that when we come with the express idea of becoming citizens only to go back to the "motherland" (which had been forgotten during all those years", we deprive others who really need the opportunity to come here.

Immigration is limited by numbers. Think of those from lesser fortunate countries or even those who are from India, but really interested in settling here. By this act of coming here (just to become citizens), we ARE depriving those who REALLY DESERVE.

People will come with a thousand excuses, including how this country "cheated" them, yada, yada, yada. None of that will cut any ice.

Now I realize that my writing will NOT change the minds of those who are predisposed to doing something like this. It won't influence those who are staunch supporters of this shameful act. It is a free world, and we have the choice of choosing between the right and wrong thing to do.

That being said, I will not apologize for what I have just penned above, nor feel ashamed about it.

Well, then Canada should provide some really nice job oppertunities to professional immigrants, cut the red tapes, treat them in a dignified manner etc...
ALso Canada is the one which set the restriction as 3 years to get the citizenship and it is not the immigrants who made this restriction.

Answers to your concerns:

1. What is the purpose of immigration? To increase the tax paying population so that they an support the social insurance for seniors who retired. Government takes the money you pay to social insurance and gives it to those who retired here.

There are several millions of Canadians who are born here and have good jobs but yet move to USA for better money. Several of them study here in Canadian Universities which are partially subsidized by Canadian Federal and Provincial money and then move to USA. Where are moral and ethics here?

We all know there is doctors shortage in Canada, especially in smaller towns and remote areas. Read the following link - almost 1 out of every 12 Canadian doctors leave to work in USA

http://mdsalaries.blogspot.com/2007/04/canadian-doctors-go-to-usa-for-better.html

This is a free democracy, just like India. People have the freedom to move anywhere as long as they do it within the law and without cheating the system.

Do you want Canada to be like Cuba or North Korea where people can't even leave the country for better opportunities?

2. No one is depriving any one the opportunity to come to Canada. For your information, canada has failed to meet its target number of immigrants for the last few years which means a large number of immigrant visas were left unused.
When some one gets their Canadian citizenship and goes back to India, they are actually giving a new immigrant an opportunity to take over the job they have resigned in Canada.

So don't 'worry' about immigration and people leaving after getting Canadian citizenship , government will worry about it

Although there are various reasons and motives for leaving your own country of origin, as well the ethics associated with the reason ("Why can't you live in India and work towards the betterment of country rather than escaping the realities), I believe immigrants in Canada can be broadly classified into four to five different categories

- Persons who survived the initial struggle, worked hard and carved out a niche for themselves. I would put politicians, doctors and businessman in this category

- Persons who survived the initial struggle, took feedback from the struggle and work/worked towards the betterment of future immigrants. These people formed groups and worked for the rights of the immigrants. I cannot pinpoint an exact example, but time to time, I come across those activists/social workers.

- People like me, who survived the struggle, had a goal in mind and achieved that goal - to get a job in their own field and be successful.

- People who took odd jobs to survive, and then got stuck into that vicious circle or changed their field of expertise, just to survive and provide a better future for their family. A person who themselves became a "sacrificial goat"

- People who came here, got the passport and moved south or moved back to their country of origin. Canadian passport just becomes an instrument of convenience. Should something happens to them in their country of residence (as in recent Gaza attacks), we taxpayers will foot the bill to ensure their safety.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah all those so called Free Birds will come back some day like homing pigeons. Once they get to India they will start talking of how good life was in Canada. No pollution, free education, free medical , no crowds , unemployment benefits and Tim Horton's  and why did we come back to this country. Then the people in India will say how stupid you are ,:cuss: we are trying to get out of this country.
Well, the grass is always greener on the other side. Integration is an important part of immigration and those who cannot integrate are better off in India.

Now my question is, when I get my test date, I have to come back and again for oath. I don't know, when it comes. It may be between 4 months from now or later. I applied in March, 2009. Any CD experiences to share?. I am from Alberta.
