I wonder how this is going to be played out as major news media made a concerted effort to report the story as, ".... an US Born muslim opened fire....". To me, it appeared to have more emphasis on what the religion of the shooter was as opposed to other things.

"To me, it appeared to have more emphasis on what the religion of the shooter was as opposed to other things."

Dimple, pardon me for saying this - you might be reading more than what was said. I thought they mentioned his religion just as a matter of fact, and were not judgmental. On the contrary, an army spokesman said this morning that there were thousands of Muslims in the armed forces in the US and that this would not have an impact on any of them.

BTW, Major Hassan, the shooter was reportedly killed by one of the soldiers in the base. However, according to latest reports, he is alive, in a "stable condition", and in custody.

Could very well be what you are saying. It just seemd odd that ABC news last night had to start with the headlines, "shootout at ...., he was a muslim..". It just felt there was a pre-determined prejudice. Of course, most news media exist these days to generate sensationalism.

Is "prejudice" not always "predetermined"?

Anyway, now the reports confirm that this shooter was a fanatic who was educated at taxpayer's expense and had six figure salary but chose shooting as his salvation. By the way, this weirdo was unmarried. May be wanted a grand honeymoon with 72 virgins. However, his lust was deadly for 12 innocents.

The news reporting on this issue was one of the most mature reporting I've ever seen.

The news was played out as a US armed servicemen who had gunned people because of mental issues due to war duties.

It now emerges that he shouted \"God is Great\" when he gunned down people.

His fear was that he did not want to go to Afghanistan as he felt that he cannot shoot down a fellow of his own religion.

But does it justify the killing of people of other religion?. May be his religion allows or his religious leaders have interpreted that it is OK to kill a person of another religion but NOT when he kills the person of his own religion.

It happened also in Mumbai when Kasab and his fellow gunmen asked the names of the hostages before shooting them.

It is well documented in Kashmir where the men where asked to drop their pants before they were shot by terrorists.

He had posted on his blog:

http://www.andrewbostom.org/blog/2009/11/06/confronting-nidal-malik-hassan%E2%80%99s-erstwhile-%E2%80%9Cmartyrdom%E2%80%9D/

about his views on suicide bombing.

The recent FATWA in India where some clerics have put on singing of Vandematram the national song of India. As the song says that we need to bow before that nation of India and its flag and as they feel that they can only bow before their god. Hence the religion is above their country.

If an Indian armed service man of a particular religion is to fight a Pakistani soldier will he shoot him as he is an enemy of the country during the war or let him go because he is part of his religion?.

The recent minority survey report had mentioned that a particular religion is not represented in the Indian army at all. They had mentioned we need to recruit more of the minorities. But will they fight an enemy in a war from Pakistan, Bangladesh or other country?.

The same applies to the personal body guards of our top leaders in India. After Indira Gandhi's assassination no sikh has been hired as a body guard of top leaders.

Will you take a chance with your life?.

But the bottom line Major. Malick Nidal Hassan(any relation to Kamalhassan?) has screwed up big time for a lot of devout, law abiding citizens of this religion in North America.

This will also move on to the employment sector as they will look over the shoulder and do unnecessary multiple checks before being hired.

Unwanted/Unnecessary act of violence when everybody was working towards peace.

That much is very true.
I was in a HR course in a local Govt . college (outside GTA) and the instructor told us to list the process taht the HR dept took after 9/11. The brightest student in the class (who is a working professional) told us that after 9/11, the management told them to watch out the immigrants (esp. those of a religion other than Canada's major religion) and to report any suspecious activities that take place. Needless to say, I am sure that their hiring process must have been made more discriminatory too.
I am not commenting to any other sentences in your post.

Peace by a PD
