Hi Good people!
My son is a PR and schooling in Canada. Last May he applied for a new passport to CGI, Toronto and was issued a new passport with a validity of 1 year only. We queried but no reply from CGI, Toronto as to why the passport was issued for only one year.
He intends to visit India in December for 2/3 weeks and will be returning to Canada in January 2010. At the time of leaving India his passport will have a validity of less than 6 months. Can this create any problem for him with the Indian Immigration at the Airport in India?

They do respond to the e-mails at their end. Please post your query with exact details such as Passport Number. Date of Departure, arrival etc., and see what response you get from them. All the details are for their verification.
If there are any qualms about this, you can sort this out with the copies of their e-mails. Please print and keep them and carry them along with the Passport, just in case if you find that you will needing them during the travels.

It seems that the passport has a validity till May 2010. If your son is going to India in December, 2009 you should immediately apply for VISA preferably on Monday itself as the passport should have a minimum of 190 days vaildity at the time of applying for VISA. If he does not have 190 days or more days for the passport to expire, the CGI will NOT issue the Visa from Toronto.

If he has already got the visa then he would not face any problem in India while coming back.

He should not have any problem as he has Indian Passport to Visit India and while coming back he is a PR with a Valid Passport so he should be good .....
To be doubly sure you can write to Canadian Immigration, check with the Airline as well .....
But why did CGI Toronto issued passport with only one year validity? Are there any norms for this?
Can anyone throw some light on this aspect?

Because it is issued from Canada to a PR .....
In the meantime they can do background checks from India and PP can be renewed from Toronto again if you have not taken citizenship .....
So it means that passport of those who are PR in Canada is always renewed for one year only?
