Hello Guys

New to this site and coming to Toronto in Jan'10.

Planning to set up a maths tutoring business (Grade 10 - 12) probably in Mississauga. Any ideas/ suggestions/ previous experiences are most welcome about the existing potential, can this be operated from a house/flat ???

anybody from chandigarh/panchkula/ mohali ??? handy for networking

cheers

most canadian avoid math and science. they can get grade 12 with photography, tourism, cooking, carpentry, english (of different but verainly lower standard than indian english), painting, acting, drama etc...

here the syllabus is too small, even if they come to you it will be four or six weeks near exams. Canadians prefer pleasure in summer and winter seasons. So, your tution business will be highly seasonal : waiting for students eight/nine months and actual teaching just three/four months.

So, consider twice before trying to teach Calculus (not all students learn calculus in grade 12)

And what about the Desi's? Do their children also avoid Maths and Science? I'm just curious cause we also don't live in Toronto but would like to know on tutions, I've seen Kumon very famous in States, is this the same in Canada?

To OP- You can try setting up a KUMON center, they are in tution business(that's not exactly they call themselves beacuse they don't teach what's in the school curriculam, their curriculam is their own).

This is a highly provocative and biased statement. It may be your opinion or belief but please do not pass it off as 'fact.' There are a multitude of options for high school students to complete in order to obtain their diplomas. I would also like you to please quote your sources that have concluded that the level of english language education is lower than that which is taught in India. Please also include what factors this is based on.

That is the reality. Most of the Canadian students (exceptions are there) avoid learning maths and science.

So by that logic, then it would make more sense for the OP to set up a math tutoring business for canadian students, wouldnt it?

Quite frankly the whole Canadian education vs Indian education discussion is getting a bit old and tiring. Really those people who feel it is better in India are risking their own children's future by continuing to allow them to study in Canada. Perhaps they can be sent to school in India to ensure they get better quality education.

thanks guys, I am getting confused by your responses as on the web I can see a lot of tutoring centres/websites like mostly-math, math-masters, tutor11, tutorsforless, mathsclinic, premier tutoring, academyofmaths(with centres in Mississauga and Brampton) just to name a few..... but according to you guys there is not much going on

pls share your experiences, any feedback is most welcome
