'Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.'
---- Martin Niemöller

Reading the comments in this thread, i get a distinct impression that CD's have a 'This can never happen to me' or ‘I will always be that lucky dude’ mindset. If it did, whom will you complain against?:(

It is clear that post 9/11, US border guards have been gradually stepping over individual’s personal rights and liberties. The USA I left behind in 2000 is vastly different from the USA of today. The US has become the very thing that it fought against in East Berlin, Soviet Bloc……..A police state!

I believe, Thomas Jefferson said: ‘When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.’

Nope, this can happen to anyone. Unfortunately, that anyone usually is someone who always contributes to some or all of the situation and blames it on others.

Regardless of anyone's impression of the border officials, there is still a high level of civility and professionalism among these guys. One cannot expect them to be cheerful/smiley/bubbly but nevertheless they are civil and professional. This is from my experience crossing the border twice a day, 5 times a week (sometimes more) since 2001 (yes, after 9/11) plus numerous crossings across Mexico and numerous crossings into various US POE from outside NA.

Also, I have noticed, they tolerate ignorance (which usually happens more often than not when an occassional tourist crosses the border). However, they also expect compliance.

One more thing, no one is required to fear these officers. In fact, self-confidence and assertiveness has been more helpful than appearing nervous and shifty.

Maybe you can enlighten the forum with some of your own negative experiences, instead of a one liner.....

That may help understand the other perspective.

It should be titled ... "Fiction writer gets Introduced to Reality".

After this incident ... he vows to not write fiction anymore - only horror stories.
