TORONTO - Striking DriveTest workers have ratified a contract and are to return to work on Monday morning.
The strike has prevented many Ontario residents from getting new drivers’ licences or renewals since August.
Some 590 DriveTest employees walked off the job Aug. 21 after talks broke off with their employer, Serco DES Inc.
The sticking points between the two sides included wages, benefits, and a proposal to increase the number of part-time employees at the expense of full-time jobs.
United Steelworkers Local 9511 president Jim Young says about 72 per cent of the workers who voted on the deal were in favour of the agreement.
Voting was held over several days across the province and results were announced late Thursday.
“It took a 19-week-long strike in order to achieve a fair deal that the Membership was willing to accept,” Young said.
“Our members are anxious to get back to work and provide the quality services that Ontarians deserve and rightfully expect,” Wayne Fraser, USW District 6 Director, said in a release. “I am proud of our members for fighting the good fight.”
