From what I know is if you read the CIC website and know how to fill out the forms, an immigration consultant can not do much more to help.

In fact from my personal experience I have felt that the Canadian embassy people prefer dealing with applicants directly rather than through a consultant who may in fact end up delaying the process.

Any thoughts?

I do agree. I had a hard time dealing through a Dubai based consultant. The presence of the agent in between had caused more delay in my processing since he was not always available to contact and every opportunity he utilized to claim more fees from me saying that my process is complicated and he has to charge me extra for the extra effort he was putting, which I understood was all bullshit. So as you said, if you can fill up the forms and if you know someone who had gone throught this process ahead of you, you can manage on your own with discussions with him or through forums like CD or trackitt.

Actually in our case the agent did help. He was able to guide us very well in terms of choosing which one of us should become the principle applicant (we would have chosen otherwise based on what we were reading). He was very helpful throughout the process. We have no regrets using his services.

Apart from CD I found following websites very useful for Canadian immigration.
http://www.canadavisa.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
http://www.immigration.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK
http://www.britishexpats.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
http://www.trackitt.com" rel="nofollow">LINK

Lots of good discussion and advice which we do not able to discuss with agent on these websites.

Our agent was total mess up but only thing he did good was suggestion of proper NOC code, which was I think crucial step.
