Bring your GSM phone from Mumbai, live in Canada for some months and then decide if you want to buy a long term contract.

Phones and plan s expensive, and you will see the majority of population in Canada uses their cellphone to the heart in the evenings and weekends when its free or inexpensive. Its funny when i see guys/ girls deeply talking on their expensive Cell in the evening ......making a statement or enjoying the cheap rates.

GSM technology is he same across the globe and in Canada used by Rogers/ Fido, and new promising entrant Wind.

If you want to check their rate plans links below,

Wind...Best it sell long term plans for which you do not need to buy their phones http://www.windmobile.ca/

Rogers (suckers) http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=WRLS_HOME

http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/Phones

You did not specify which province you are moving to but you can also do a comparison of the available phone plans, http://bestbuymobile.comparecellular.com/compare-plans/index.asp?l=&h=488and to warn you majority of the plan except (Wind) are only available when you buy their phone.

Sorry for the information overload

GSM frequency is different in India and Canada. Make sure that the phone is quad band or can work with 1900 and 850 used in Canada.

Free evenings is a feature that you have to subscribe to and pay for.

AFAIK, Differential daytime and evening rates are only on pay-as-you-go plans, not on monthly plans.

Wind is giving offer of $ 35/- for one month. Mobile is free and you have to sign 6 months contract and all incoming and outgoing free. Local sms is free but you have to pay for National and International SMS. I feel presently they are giving best deal in canada.

Recently I heard that, solo is giving best deal. Just pay $ 25/- per month and get free International Text, evening free calls 7 pm to 7 am and weekends free calls. No signing of contracts. Pay as you go.

I think this deal also is good.
