Friends, we have recently learnt that desis pay a lot to Immi. consultants to help them settle in canada. Some did not get whatever was promised back home.

If a desi is not in a position to pay big bucks to these consultants and does not have friends/relatives in canada, DO WE HAVE ENOUGH INFO ON THIS WEBSITE to guide him??

If so, there is no need to hire an agency.

We should also post our experiences with such immi. consultants which will help the desis backhome make decision.

In my opinion is it not at all necessary. What they promise is a job - and finding any job is very easy here - so what is use?

If they say that we will give you a job in your field, then it makes sense.

Even a recruitment agency whose function it is to find you a job in your field does not guarantee you that they'll find you a job. So I wonder on what basis these immgration consultants would make such claims. I don't think they can find you a job in your field.

I think in about 90% of the cases of newly arrived immigrants, they at least know one person who's already here. They can certainly get advice and help from them on how to proceed with the initial stuff.

For the other 10%, it might be advisable to at least have a consultant find accomodation. Because you can't land at the airport in a new country with a family and have nowhere to go. But you should not have to pay a fortune for this, considering how many ads are posted in every Indian grocery store for basement accomodations. I would not pay more than Rs. 5000 for this service.

Well there are many ads on this site for "apartment renting" http://canadiandesi.ca/postercategory.php?CID=8

Actually I got idea to have classifieds on this site just because of postings on Grocery stores!

You are right, you don't need to pay anything for "finding a job". Even for accomodation, if you are coming to big city like Toronto and you don't have any one known, you can come without worry.

"Amazing story of my eventful first year in Canada
By Desi in Alberta

Air Canada brought us promptly and efficiently to Calgary International Airport. I had decided to land in Alberta because I am an Engineer and heard that it would be easy to find a job and get settled quickly. My visa showed Toronto as my destination in Canada but there is no problem if you land in any other city.

I knew absolutely nobody in Calgary. I arrived here in the warm days of June. The year was 1999. I had my two kids also with me.

I was excited and a bit apprehensive too. I had brought the C$14000 as recommended by the visa process. This money is very useful for helping you get started with your new life in Canada in the first six months. "Welcome to Calgary!" the sweet voices said as we completed our paperwork at the immigration counters.

We took a taxi from airport to a cheap motel (I had phoned the motel from India and made arrangement for my first few days accomodation).............."
==============================================

So guys, this means that you can book a motel (cheap one) from India, in case, you don't want to be a paying guest or share a house/appt.

I wonder ,do the credit cards from India work here??
(Excuse my ignorance. I've been out of India since 1989)

Since most of the desis land in GTA, we should provide a list of cheap motels which accept reservations from India.

I think this should be very helpful for someone who knows noone here.

What do you think??

Gujubhai,

This is good idea. I am thinking to have network of people who provides such services and list them on site. People from India (or anywhere else) can access that information.

The services will be:

Receiving from Airport
Stay for couple of days
Food - (espeically for vegetarian people)
SIN Card application help
Stay for first 15 to 30 days
Permenant stay search
and Job Search Help (resume writing etc.)

If we have list all across canada of people proving such services it will be very helpful, what to you say?

It is good to know that you are in this country since 89!!!

No yaar.........I've spent most of my years in europe(France) and some time in US.....My wife is from here. But, recently, had good experience in helping our relatives from India settle down who came here on point system indep. category..........started to learn how things work.

Man, it is not that easy....if you come directly from India especially with wife and kids.

I wonder if we have the famous HOTEL-MOTEL-PATEL network here like the US??
