This info is for a family consisting of 2 adults and 2 kids landing in couple of days from India.
I have been told it takes 60-90 days for the health card to kick in and so they are planning to get some insurance from India. So if any of the expenses which is not being covered by insurance can they claim while filing taxes?
Is there anything else new immigrants can claim in the first year ?
If thers then i can advise them to secure their receipts till they file taxes.

FOR THE HEALTH COVERAGE TO TAKE EFFECT: (Kick in)
It does take 90 days in Ontario. Alberta provides on the day of landing after applying and securing their coverage. So, check where they are landing and the rules that are current in that Province and with their Hospital Coverage.

BEFORE you land, you don't have a Canadian P.R., So any expenses that you incurred has no bearing upon the Health Care Expenses that you can claim here in Canada. So, it is advisable to find a local provider and obtain a suitable coverage and for a specific duration, if it calls for. (IN Alberta they Do not need this.)

In the ONTARIO Tax System,**(in line 5872, which you can claim after landing here and while submitting a tax return) one can claim a set 3% of his or her NET Income and most of us find it is not feasible as it falls below that threshold. Though, a few do get it.

Freddie.
