- It'll be nice to have an option where if I could afford it, I can get healthcare when I want it!

100% agree although Mississauga is starting to see a decline there in areas due to high population pressure.

3. Not having to worry about getting shot in the street (outside of Toronto, that is).

Well actually that can be said of a lot of American cities as well.

4. Far superior public schools.

I'll take that with a pinch of salt. Can you validate that with facts? As far as I know, public schools in Mississauga don't even provide textbooks to students. Not the case in the States.

And the most important one:

5. Real beer (not the yellow swill made from corn syrup that Americans have to drink).

Come on now, I do love Canadian beer but there are some pretty good American ones too. And did you know that Canadian beer is almost 60% cheaper across the border? Figure that out :D

Yup. Second that.
When I was in Nigara Falls (in USA) observed the following :
1. Beer was stacked in Walmart
2. Egg (12 nos.) was $ 1
3. MIlk (3.25 % homo) - $ 1.68 (for 3.73 litres) + you can use the Milk bottle for storing water.
4. Gas regular at US $ 2.89 for 3.73 litres.
5. Automobile parts less by 50 %
6. Free check engine light diagnosis.

GTA is generally around 120 kms from the border and we have a population of 7 million. Are we not a greater market if it is that cheap in Niagra falls (a city crumbling). Who are these guys kidding. I would not mind if the difference in prices went to the Govt. in the form of taxes to revitalise our helath care, jobs and education but it goes to the pockets of sharholders. It is a shame.

Thanks TK. The biggest problem with this country is that not enough people complain. On the contrary people like me who do complain are branded as "anti Canada" by the same people I am trying to help.

Haven't we had the exact same discussion a few months ago as well? Oh! What the heck, we repeat Canada v/s India all the time. So be it.

Here's my take.

After a much consideration, I also started cross border shopping for my clothing, car, and grocery needs. Since, the border(Washington State) is only 15 minutes from my house I pay homage to the great USofA biweekly. Needless to say, it ends up saving a great deal. Locally, I only buy vegetables, fruits, and other titbits. Here's the major difference in prices:

Gas: $2.80 - $2.96 a gallon ($4.24 in Canada)
Milk: $2.39 for a can ($4.50 in Canada). Two weeks ago, I even bought a milk for $0.99 a gallon. There was a deal.
A real (no concentrate) fruit juice - $2.99 vs. almost $4 here.
Beer: Six pack for about $6 vs. $14 in Canada

And here's the big one:

A 4 bedroom detached house in Washington costs $250,000 as compared to $550,000 to <no upper limit> in Greater Vancouver Area. That's a real bummer. If only I had a special status to buy a house there. I know they have a houseing crash, before someone points it out to me :)

And, oh! By the way, before someone utters an oft repeated expression 'go back if don't like Canada', then I must say I love Canada but just pointing out the savings across the border (why the heck am I being defensive here?). Thank heavens for I live in a closest proximity to the border. Long live the USofA.

To DesiTiger: Don't worry, man! People don't want to come out of their comfort jone to voice negatives. Also, they don't want to be branded as critics, which is a 'why the hell do you criticise everything around' word.

It is one thing to applaud mediocrity and other to be victim of it. While the socialized system of medicine in Canada works fine for people for ordinary problems and reportedly in case of emergency situations, I would urge people to have a look at wait times for MRI and Cancer surgery. These wait times are insensibly high. God forbid, if someone dear to you falls sick with some serous disease, they would pay with their life. I understand the feelings and attitude of left leaning socially progressive people who feel that “ Tu agar meri na ho saki to kuch nahi , magar tu aur kisi ki bhi na ho” meaning that if “If you do not belong to me, you can not belong to any one else”. If someone contends that health care system is good in Canada, best of luck to him. It is difficult to argue about this. On CD forum, the topic has been very passionately discussed in past. I just want to draw attention to the fact that we are paying a very high price for mediocrity called free health care. We have to pay for ambulance, drugs, parking at hospitals, room charges, charges for getting reports, Ontario health tax (Employee and employer) and higher income taxes. Health care is milch cow of Mcguinty. Billions that are spent on fraudulent ehealth projects is testimony. Recently there was news that Mcguinty cronies get tens of thousands in salary from University health network without ever working there. It is well known that Cancer patients do not get latest drugs as these are costly. Thanks to Obama, USA soon will have same kind of problems that we have in Canada. One more reason not to migrate to USA.
