What is going on with the Canadian Sikh Community?.

There are a few bad apples and they are causing much damage to the Sikh communities reputation and also their religious rights.

In the last 2 weeks there have been 3 incidences where the Kirpan, Tyre wrench, Knifes, Swords and many other dangerous weapons have been used and people have been injured.

This will lead to the Kirpan being banned in Canada.

Terrible some of them have resorted to show of strength in place of using democratic methods for showing their opposition

Liberal MP Dosanjh has warned the Indian Government that some of the Khalistan elements in BC have been poisoned are reviving their activities in Canada.

The Brampton clash incidence has been splashed all over India during the international news program.

Many of my friends and relatives are asking me whether Canada is also like India in terms of law and order?.

What can I say?.

May be Brampton should be added into Indian map.

Thanks Vandematram for bringing real issue that our community does not want to talk. The most vulnerable are next generation who never lived in India and they take that crap as fact.

When I was living in Vancouver that time I heard once kids are talking "India is controlling Punjab"

‘Distorted’ multiculturalism to blame for rise in Sikh extremism, Dosanjh says

Just wondering, how do people feel who attend the functions or visit to temple/gurdwara who has soft corner for extremism (in form of pictures sometime) or…. We don’t care good/bad but we go for only pooja/matha takne.?

A minority of Canadian Sikhs have gone wild in full circle. Though, Not a new phenomena here in Western counties especially Canada. Here's something new came out today, that MP Ujjal Dosanjh has been again threatened on a Facebook page and labelled as a 'Traitor to Sikhs'. RCMP is currently investigating.

http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Online+death+threat+aims+Ujjal+Dosanjh/2940832/story.html

However, unfortunate is the fact that these miniscule Sikhs are tarnishing the whole community's image. They believe to be the caretaker to the whole 'Sikh Religion' just ilke any other religious fundamentalists. To them, there's no place in Sikhism for a moderate Sikhs. When moderate Sikhs question their actions, they are either labelled as 'Traitors', or 'Agent of India', or worst 'Not a Sikh'. These extremists have taken over Sri Gurughar and the religious festivals. Second and third generation Sikhs here have no idea of Indian and Sikh history and they are brainwashed since the time they are born. The end result? A hateful and a threatening facebook page aimed at a Member of Parliament and a shameful display of extremist'/terrorist' pictures in a pure Vaisakhi Festivals and in Sri Gurudwara Sahibs.

Canadian Govt. should really look into it, and try to subjugate these bad apples and elements within the society. Otherwise, one day this issue will be blown to where there'll be no turning back. These groups must understand that in Canada, you can't take your home country's problems, whether be it LTTE, Khalistan, or something similar. You want to raise these issues and worship your extremist brothers? Sure, do so in your own home countries and face consequences. Remember, Bhagat Singh fought the freedom struggle within India itself and didn't deter from the consequences. It's too easy to make statements in a cushy living room here in Canada. If they really want to do something for Punjab, they must be in Punjab, India and not in Canada really.

Please spare us majority moderate and peaceful Sikhs, for whom visiting Gurdwara Sahib is for peace of mind and worship. If they really want to worship the terrorists and extemists then they have a right to do so being confined within the walls of their homes, not on the streets by maligning the ever pure Vaisakhi festivals. Hence, tarnishing the whole community's image. Sometimes I wonder Who are they praying, as our Guru Sahibs and Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee preach only peace, love, and respect to our fellow brethren. When they can not understand the basic tenets of Sikhism, they can not and should not be the leaders of the whole community.

Shame on them.

Febpreet your response was well thought out and I agree with the majority of what you wrote. I just wanted to point out two thoughts I had about what you wrote above:

1) The whole community has strength in numbers. Unfortunately there is apathy. People I have talked to either plead ignorance of what is going on (and these are first generation immigrants I talked with). They are afraid to stand up.

2) its not totally true that 2nd or 3rd (and in BC its 4th and 5th and 6th generations too) dont know about indian or sikh history. Thats a generalization :)

Agree with you here, and sorry for this generalization. Yes, they might know about Indian and Sikh history but are not aware of the ground realities in Punjab in particular and India in general. They bring 'Hindu-Sikh-Hindu' so much in their conversation that someone like me who was born/lived in India for 28 years couldn't help but wonder as to where they are getting all this information.

May be I have met so many of them. Strange is the fact that voices from moderate sikhs either are not raised in objection or even if they do, it does not come out in the mainstream. Result? Few bad apples rot the whole bunch.

Ujjal Dosanjh is an example. Threats against those that speak out against fanaticism isnt just limited to the Sikh community. People may be afraid to speak out and be vulnerable to those fanatical few.

I read somewhere that religious mania and mental illness are related.
