Boxer Beer fighting with Ontario
Bargain-brand brew in tough over complaint about name

TORONTO -- Less than three months after punching its way into the Ontario market, Alberta-based Boxer Beer is getting jabbed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario — over its name.
Majit and Ravinder Minhas, the sister and brother who own the Minas Creek Brewing Company, received a letter from the AGCO in December about the name of their Boxer Lager.
The complaint seems to centre on the beer’s name, which could be construed as using sports to advertise, a no-no under Ontario’s liquor regulations. Its unknown to the public who filed the complaint.
After fighting their way into the Ontario market, the producers of Boxer Beer vow they aren’t going to get knocked out.
Manjit Minhas told the Sun recently that the AGCO investigation came as a surprise for the bargain brand that boasts it is sold at the lowest legal price and comes only in cans.
“We’d been working with them for a number of months to get all our approvals and licences in a row,” she said. “The beer was released in early November, it had been on the shelves for about five weeks, when we got this letter from them.”
They have until the end of January to respond to the AGCO about the name.
An ad campaign on the beer’s website hits on the word’s connection to everything but boxing, including Boxing Day, the Boxer dog breed, boxer shorts and China’s turn-of-the-century Boxer Rebellion.
The can’s design features a Crown but dodges any overt boxing symbols.
AGCO spokesman Lisa Murray confirmed the commission is investigating a complaint, stressing it is the commission’s duty to investigate any and all complaints.
Murray said the AGCO has asked the beer makers for information.
The duo, which took over a U.S. brewery and has conquered 15% of beer sales in the prairies, say they have been happy with sales so far in Ontario.
“It took us so long to get into the Ontario marketplace; it has been quite a long five year battle to get in there,” Minhas said.
But Minhas said after fighting so hard to break into the province’s Beer Store, she can’t help but wonder who filed a complaint about her beer.
“We really feel we’re being taken for a ride here,” she said. “By who? We’re not exactly sure.”
Regardless, the Alberta beer baron is vowing to hold on for a few rounds here in Ontario and isn’t ruling out a dreaded name change to stay in the ring.

I do hope we will have the same thing happening in TV and Telecommunication services shortly.
