Hi cd's,

I want to apply for OCI Card/Dual Citizenship. Can someone tell me, exactly in nutshell, what's the benefit of getting it, in detail. How long I can stay in India if I have dual citizenship?

Meaning that, If I have dual citizenship for India, I can travel without visa any number of times and can stay in either country, period.

Is it worth taking, if we do not travel much like once in 5 years.

Thanks.

This link has answers to your questions -> http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/oci-chart.pdf

You can stay in India indefinitely. It is a life long visa, so you don't need any other visa to travel to India.

With regards to its worthy-ness if you only travel once in 5 years, that's your call. OCI costs USD 275, where as a 6-month visitor visa will cost $123.

Besides, if you have to travel in an emergency, a 1-month visa will cost you $178, as opposed to if you have a OCI, just book your ticket and fly.

India does not recognize dual citizenship. It only gives lifelong visa as in OCI. Major benefit is that you do not have to go to consulate/VFS every time you plan to go to India or if an emergency comes up requiring travel to India.

Correct. What I find interesting is on the Ministry of Home Affairs website, they have their own interpretation of "Dual Citizenship" aka OCI. Check this link - > http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/intro.pdf :D

That's what must be confusing people.

I must say that OCI is much more than just a life long visa. It is almost equal to Dual citizenship barring eligibility to an Indian passport, purchase of Agricultural lands, voting and holding a public office. You get NRI status meaning that you have special previlages for contributing to the foreign exchange. One such is special reservation (under NRI quota) in top notch educational institutions of India (with NRI higher fees).
So it is much more than just a life long visa.
Peace

Hi TK,

I have seent the differences between NRI's pio'S and OCI.

With respect to benifits, it says PIOs and OCI s are in parity with NRIs except purchase of agricultural land.

I purchased a land in chennai valasaravakkam and it went into court case due to some problems.

Thereafter we won the case but i can acquire the land only through filing execution petition in the court.

This Execution petition process is going on for some time, and i doubt it will finish only after i complete 3 yrs here and by the time i may not be indian citizen but may be an OCI or PIO.

The advocate who is looking after all these procedures is telling "OCI's parity with NRI's in economical " is not defined properly.

By t he time EP is finished, if i am NRI it is ok, otherwise unnecessary problems.

Do you have the government website link for such definitions.

I apprecie your answer.

Thanks.

I think it depends on individual institutions to decide whether they would admit someone on NRI quota or whether OCI can be admitted under NRI quota. I do not think there is any government mandate on this.
