Think of the burden on agricultural resources, should every person in the world stops eating meat. Does earth has enough land and grain to feed all its population?
Also, until I came to Canada, I never realised that protein in meat form is so essential in majority diets. To see people eating meat all the time, and not eating vegetables was kind of a shock to me initially.
I think, there is a Sanskrit saying "जीवो जीवस्य भक्शणम". So this may also include humans, even though they have a brain that analyses what is ethical and what is not.

In my ideal world, yes everyone should stop eating meat however im not that unrealistic
Meat protein is *not* essential to live. Protein can be found by other sources. I think thats a justification by those who dont want to stop eating it.
Eating vegetables is linked to increased health. People generally dont eat enough vegetables.

Watch 'Food Inc.' and you will find out how our food is being manufactured (not produced anymore) - Veg. or Non. Veg. and for that matter Vegan. Yes, it's alarming.
I eat chicken occasionally, and could safely say that I am 98% Veg (with 2% occasional Chicken only and no other meat). Personally, I do not have any issues with meat eaters, as each of us have a food habits that need to be respected. Having said that, and with due respect to the Non-Vegetarians I could hardly accept when they say meat offers more protein, iron, and all the other nutrients(may be). Rather, it's the veggies that offer these in ample quantity. As 'Morning_rain' mentioned, we don't eat as much veggies as required for our body. But even if you lack the required quantity, veggies' benefits outnumber meat in any given day.
Moreover, it is proven (time and again) that people who eat Veggies live a healthier life, no matter how much protein a meat offers. Again, I am not trying to say that either Veg or Non-Veg is good - each to their own food habits. All boils down to one's happiness and preferences.
