Hi,
My husband is a Software professional who is holding a workpermit valid until Sept 2010.
I was a software professional having 4 years experience in core programming languages and is currently on visitor visa to join my husband in Canada.
I strongly desire to work and would like to apply for work permit in Canada .
My visitor visa is valid until Sept 2010 and am currently residing in Canada
I would be really grateful if you can answer me the below queries
1) Should I apply for workpermit only after gettting my husband's extended work permit copy ?
2) Can I contact the nearest Citizenship and Immigration office in Canada and apply for workpermit ?
3) Generally how long would it take to process a work permit for spouse ?
4) Should I ask for \"OPEN WORK PERMIT\" while applying ??

1) No. Apply for it now. (Extend it after wards when you ask for a Visa Extension) They might oblige.
2) YES. you may contact them. If you are close by or nearer to a Immigrant Help Center, drop in and see them. They will help you with allof the processing and will also tell you what to do later on when the work permit expires.
3) About a month. See their website and search for 'Processing Times'
4) Yes.

Is your Husband's Employer happy with his work and will he renew the work permit. If he is and renews it, then, you can ask for the renewal of your Visa. All of these take place 60 days prior to expiry. So does your Visitor's visa into Canada. Now you have to figure this one out. Which comes first.?
In my opinion your Husband's Employer should renew his Work Permit and should give you an idea that he has done it. On the same day, you also ask for the extension of your visa here. All of this has to be taken care of in short order. We are in June now.
You are applying for your work permit, when you receive it you will be ready to ask for another extension on that issue also. You might have also applied Applied Inland for Processing of a PR Application. You are slowly sliding that into the scenery here.
Hence....
I can ramble on here giving you an idea as to what to do. That is why I said that you go and drop in and see the Immigrant Help Center people and discuss all of these things there and they have all of the forms and applications and a gentleman to give you all of the help there. He will also show you how all of this will evolve chronologically in the future.
Inland processing here in Canada might take upto 60 days. It is a TWO step process. If and when the first step is complete and the papers move out of Canada and reach where ever you are from, it will take upto EIGHT months to see it return back with the good news. Discuss this also with them when you visit.
What ever you do, do not lose your Visitor Visa status here in Canada.

Yes my husband's employer is satisfied and he is gonna apply extension for another 1 year !!
All that I'm worried about is , would it not be too long to wait until I receive my husband's extended work permit copy ??
Moreover the rules for IT professionals are being changed from Sept30th,2010.
So If I had to process my work permit application to enjoy the privilege of LMO exempt(Labor market exempt) ,I should be applying work permit well before ..right ??

First wait for the employer to apply for the renewal of the work permit. Then give it a day or two and then do it. But you can surely get the forms and get them filled in preparation. Don't forget the Passport Pictures too.
