Hi ,
I am planning to land in June and will settle down in Ottawa in July ( will stay in Toronto initially with my aunt till PR card arrives)
Have a couple of questions :
My work location might be @ James Naismith Dr, Ottawa, ON K1B 5N8 .
1. Can you suggest a good locality for housing . Its just me and my husband so we can initially even manage in a studio. The only thing we are looking at is proximity to bus routes as we don't want to invest in a car this soon.
2. Indian grocery stores in the area of housing suggested
3. Good Mobile connection. We are looking at a connection which has Canada wide calling.
4. Indian communities / associations in Ottawa
Thanks

The two websites most of us search ..... and look for....:

http://ottawa.en.craigslist.ca/apa/
One that is currently available, but would have been taken by the time you arrive here. So start your search all over again whenever you are ready to move.

The local division of Ottawa is into counties. And in the map you see the titles and a few Red sections that are populated and have developed very well. The other regions are getting developed but the Public Transportation to and from some of the areas will be timed far a few and some areas might not have week end services. So, be guided by these factors when you look for a place to live.
The maps I have provided you in the previous post will give you an idea how to get back from your work location. Now you will have to find a place to live. Here is the link once again. In this link you will see directions. When you click on it you will see to and from location for you to complete. After completion if you hit the enter button, you will see the route gets highlighted on the map and you can see the buses that run on that route and if you go to the BUS routes in OCTRANSPO and see the numbers, you will know the frequencies and the meeting points and the wait times etc., At each intersection on the street, there is a sign post. And on the sign post you will see a phone number, which you can call and find out when the next bus arrives at that location. All these are advanced features you will have to learn to use to get to know the finer points in living here in this country of ours.

Since you are looking for the Indian Groceries, you will have to narrow it down to a couple and a place to live close by, or vice versa. Regardless where you live you will have to commute. So, take a Monthly Bus Pass and keep the receipts, there are income tax deductions for that expense. It is planning and you will learn the same because of necessity.
You will get to know a lot of things as time progresses and it is this experience that you will have to get to gain by living one day at a time.

Bus service in Ottawa is very good. You will hardly find any need of car.
July is the perfect time. Ottawa is a great place for families (no offence to other cities/towns). It has a great bus / train service. I take bus to work. Couple of good desi grocery stores, new hindi movies (Kites, Raajneeti) in the cinema like in the GTA, good eat outs.
I dont know which part of India u r from, my suggestion would be to contact the concerned association. Who knows there may be people from your city living in Ottawa. Language bonds very well.

I will be honest dude. I live in Ottawa and its completely different from Toronto...If you are looking for Indian communities, theres hardly any here in ottawa...its predominantly government employees and politicians who are obviously canadian citizens....specially since I live in downtown I think I am the only Indian living here...haha...I dnno there might be some indians scattered in the suburbs.
Good Luck !
