I am from the financial services industry and has 2 years work experience in Alberta. I am contemplating relocating to Toronto. Toronto being the financial capital of Canada, the advantages are quite obvious. I would request tenured members from GTA areas to please give me some feedback on the disadvantages & practical difficulties of being in GTA. This will help me in arriving at an appropriate decision. Thanks in advance. :p

I am here since only a month... but I can tell you one big disadvantage: high car insurance premiums.

Too hot/humid in summers, and lack of scenic places top in my list.

However, on a personal note - being in Canada's biggest financial hub (careerwise) and relatively lower real estate than the other big citiies (Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton) surpass all the other drawbacks/disadvantages.

I agree with Febpreet ... living in the GTA , I miss the scenic charm of Halifax / Dartmouth where each evening drive would be so refreshing in the summers .

1.Underpaid jobs due to lack of jobs and too many people.
2.Expensive real estate.
3.Over populated.
4.Long traveling times - Over congested roads due to lack of alternative means of transportation.

I disagree with you here. Wait till you see Vancouver buddy. I always like Toronto for it's relatively inexpensive mid-level real estate. You guys have more choices when it comes to semi-detached and detached houses. Due to the size of demographics and without the area constraints one can move farther and hence houses becomes more affordable.

Traffice congestions are everywhere and I believe is a global phenomena in big cities. The only way you can get rid of it is if you take public transport and live near your workplace. Both of these scenario are based upon various other factors.

I would say what really goes against Toronto is the growing population. Each and every person immigrates there from all over the world. Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and other big cities in Canada see relatively low immigration rates, hence not many opportunities. So what goes against Toronto is by far benefits it as well to some extent.

My only problem with Toronto is lack of green and scenic spaces, which as I mentioned in my earlier post has also been sidetracked by more career opportunities and inexpansive real esatate. You get settled easily, hence. More bucks in your pocket. I have seen people have more disposable income in Toronto than anywhere else - at least if compare to Vancouver.

Of-course, Oakville is an exception :)
