I have a Sony Vaio CPU (Old) small in size. perhaps 256 MB RAM. It is very slow but has licensed windows,MS office etc. One of our friend checked and told us that there are $200-250 worth licensed software so do not throw away.Is it possible to increase the speed of computer? (This was given free to me when I went to collect LCD monitor).

any help is appreciated.

You will have to get it checked to see how much RAM it can support and how much it will cost. You have to get the exact model number, then google it, may be you find its manual where it says what type RAM and how much RAM the motherboard will support.

If you check system properties in control panel, it will tell what is speed of processor. If processor is too slow then RAM is not going to make a huge difference.

Usually it not worth investing money in old computers.

Windows License is usually OEM based, so you will not be able to use it on any other computer. So although its expensive to buy it, its of no use to you.

MS Office you can move to your new desktop/laptop if you have the CD, if not you can use some tools to get the license key from this desktop and then install Office on new machine using that license code.

Can you check and post the model details (I am talking about CPU ofcourse, other model details would also do ).
If there is mentioned software installed on that CPU then it may be older version and capable of running on that box. lets try and search memoy in ebay or something similar and see the cost. if it works out well within your budget, why not give it a try for a year or so after which you can plan on buying a nice sleek tablet PC.

Since this is a PIII processor and you are not planningn on developing software applications, I think you can upgrade its memory for around 40 bucks and live with little slow PC for a year and then get a nice powerful machine later on.

All you will have to do is to open the box, remove old memory and put the new one. Good luck. Also you can take the memory to Futureshop or BB and see if they have modules of 256K.

Good luck!
