Hi there guys! I'm a Canadian desi who recently graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I've been looking for work since the start of last academic year (admittedly with a brief job hunt hiatus during my second semester) and unfortunately, I haven't had much luck.
I was referred to this website by my mother who found this website quite helpful. So, if one of you awesome people have any job leads, referrals or contacts that I could use, it would be of incredible help. I could also buy you a beer or two as a show of thanks, lol.
I'm quite good at electronics theory (I primarily specialized in power distribution, conversion and control systems as well as analog circuit design) and being an Electrical Engineer, I'm not bad at programming (being a Desi helps in some ways, haha!). I have had some web development experience in a volunteer position and I've also had exposure to actual paid work experience in the form of a telesales/technical support role that I had back in Dubai when I was still in high school.
As I said before, if anyone knows if someone is looking for a person of my skills and qualifications... please do let me know.
Thanks a bunch!
you are offering only beer lol, it is not enough
what about if the person don't drink? now, please don't offer cigarettes I don't smoke either.
let me think, what can be done for you.? Inspite of canadian education, I presume you are born in canada. you are unable to get job. Interesting case. Why don't you go to Canadian Govt/MPP and start banging their door or table of whatever is within your sight.? Now , I am not so shocked when new immigrants are not getting job for more than one year.

What is your co-op work experience?
Hey basanthmenon,
Have you considered looking for a job in provinces other than ON, or in the US? I am sure you could succeed if you broaden your horizon. Work wherever you get a job for about 2 years and when you will have gained the required work experience in your field, there would always be an option to come back to Ontario. This will enhance your employment prospects with the companies based in your home province.
Think about it. May be coming out a little from your comfort zone could do a trick for you. That's all the advise I have for you based upon my own experience (as an immigrant).
On a side note, you can also contact your MP in this regard. I don't know how it works, but one of my cousins, who Graduated as a Chemical Engg. from UofT did that and was successful in securing an interview(and eventually job offer) in one of the largest Canadian Engg. firm. Try that. You'll have nothing to lose.
Hey there! Thanks for the quick responses.
Gopalpai, if you don't drink or smoke... I'm sure you at least eat right? In that case, a good dinner can be arranged, lol.
As for being born in Canada... no, I wasn't born in Canada. I immigrated here in February 2006 with my parents who went back to Dubai where I did my schooling. I currently have permanent residency (recently applied for my citizenship). My parents however, came back to Canada to fulfill the requirements to renew their PR just about a year ago. By the grace of God, they're doing somewhat alright on the job front.
I can't really explain why I haven't been getting a job apart from the fact that I'm only somewhat above average in terms of my grades. I know I can easily get a sales position or something in marketing if I wanted, but the reason I posted on this forum is because I wanted to see if anybody had any leads in terms of an actual engineering job. Being Indians, most of us are either in IT, medicine or engineering, so it just seemed to make sense to ask other Indians if they had any contacts in my field.
Like I said, I've been trying for about a year now (since the beginning of the first semester of my last year at uni) and so far, I have had an interview with Accenture for Systems Integration consultancy and an informal interview with a small engineering company that hasn't been in touch with me since. So, I'm not exactly doing too well on the job front as you can see.
So far, I think I've applied to nearly 80-90 companies over the past couple of months. The count has been low because of the fact that I'm not able to find the specific type of job that I'm looking for. I would be trying for something in sales if I needed money but more than that, I need experience in my field because I have a specific career path in mind.
Gopalpai, you said something about banging on the door of the Canadian Govt/MPP for work; how exactly might I go about doing that? I applied for a government internship and I have also been checking Job Bank Canada for a while (even applied to some positions there), but so far, nothing has panned out. Do you have any other suggestions?
febpreet, how would I go about contacting the MP? I don't know much about this process so, I'd definitely like to hear your suggestions. As for being out of my comfort zone, I would DEFINITELY be willing to go to the US for work, but the fact that I don't have citizenship means that most American companies would not look at me due to the fact that I may be an added liability in terms of the paper work that they'd have to file for my work visa. Am I right in assuming this?
Btw meghal, I don't have any co-op or internship experience. My school doesn't provide a co-op program. As for internships, there are hardly any summer internships for students. Most of the ones I saw when I used to apply spanned 8-16 months at the very least. I did not want to take a year off school at the same time.
Again, thank you guys for your time.
Try Waterloo area and vicinity.
Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Eaton( Milton), etc.
A few years back Rockwell International had demand for high-voltage power systems engineers.
please visit the following co-op programme and see what they have to tell you and how they can help you. check co-op programme closer to where you stay or call these people and ask them for contact details of co-op programme closer to where you stay.
co-op programme.

2. Go to MPP/Govt HR office and tell them, (show proof) that, you have been seriously applying and are unable to get job. Take printout of mails. Act as if you had it enough, (though I don't think you need to act after give and take 15-20 days more ) and tell them you are not moving from here, unless they help you with the job. (bhook hadtal) be strong when you are talking even start shouting if it helps.
3. While applying for the jobs, make sure their job criteria is same as yours. cut and paste their job responsibilities in working experience and make some changes here and there. Maybe it may help to get job faster.
4. Visit HCR and talk to them and tell them, you are looking for job opportunities in your own field and not interested in doing survival jobs. perhaps they will help you get job in your own field.
5. try applying here. http://www.bombardia.com." rel="nofollow">LINK
all the best.
P.S. You know what, I love Dosas.
