Also often they will do small talk with you just to check if you understand English/French when you go to write your exam.
Yes I agree she needs to learn at least basic conversational English to appear for the interview. I will recommend her to join English classes and also try the translation.com for some complex sentences.

BTW, if she pass the test and become citizen then no more free English classes for her.
Citizens are not eligible for free English classes.

In Montreal i have not heard of free English classes but there are free French classes for new immigrants (free up to 5 yrs from the date of landing. After that if anyone wants to continue then they have to pay a moderate fee)
