Humane society is a good idea, but u have to be careful about the history of the dog. Sometimes they can be aggressive if they were abused by previous owner, a risk if you are planning this for kids. And you would miss the Puppy phase which is a great experience.

The advantage of getting an adult dog (1 year of age and up) is that their nature/personality/behavior is already known. The shelter staff will document and help you pick out a dog that is suited to your needs. I have also heard that abused dogs that go to loving homes eventually heal (isnt that true of us ppl as well?) but its a comfort level.

dfwrp: been there done that three times...as you probably know that goldens tend to keep their 'puppyness' for about 5-6 years. They are big babies

I dont miss the potty training days. My carpets/shoes/furniture/walls barely withstood the teething..lol..
