You can complain because roses have thorns or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.
You will need to get a B1 visa. A letter from your company , paystubs , landed immigrant paper should bne enough to get a visa. You gotta call a 900 number to fix an appointment if this is the FIRST time that you are applying for US visa.
All nonimmigrant visa applicants who wish to apply for a visa at a U.S. Consulate in Canada should complete the form DS-156 Nonimmigrant Visa Application on-line. Although completing an application form on-line will create a bar code, allowing for more efficient visa processing, your information is not downloaded directly to the U.S. Consulate and you must still bring your printed application form, with bar code, to your interview.

You will perhaps have to cancel your existing appointment. Incidentally, how did you book your current appt? Did you use the phone or did you do it online using the internet?
I suggest you book the appt using the internet and online. I just checked and Ottawa has vacancies for appointments starting May 19 - 8 spots, May 20 - 37 spots, May 21 - 28 spots, May 24 - 0 spots, May 25 - 35 spots and so on...
Here is their URL for booking appointments online: http://www.nvars.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
Try it even without cancelling your current appt. Maybe it will work. Let us know how it works out.
