Not sure if you guys are aware, however, now you can make calls using gmail. NA is free. I used it and the call quality is great. Rates to India are not competitive, hope they go down soon. The best is free NA. Screw all long distance plans.

yes, landlines and mobiles in NA are free. You can call other countries too at a charge. India is 6c which is four times the cost at localphone.

you mean from gmail (computer) to landline/mobile of NA?
Is the feature available in Canada? In the link it is written: "We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already)."
Also Google voice is available in US for quite some time with free calls to US and Canada.
Edit: The feature is now available to users in Canada. I logged out and logged back in and could see call phone option in chat.

Good news is that if Google provides such kind of service then it will be awesome from quality point of view.
