Hi All,
I am in Singapore at present. My application is in process, hoping to land in Feb' 2005, but worried about IT jobs there.
pls give some info. about this :
1) How is the IT jobs in Toronto and Vancouver.
2) How long it may take to catch a job in Canada after landing.
Considering the fact that I am having around 9 years of
Software development and have worked in India, UK, Hong Kong
and Singapore. At present I am working with American multinational
company.
My Skills includes : Dataware Housing (Informatica),Oracle,
Sybase,VB,ASP,XML etc.
3) I have heard that experience and qualifications of other countries are not considered in Canada? is it right?
3) Is it possible to arrange job from Singapore itself.
4) If its very difficult to get a IT job then what other jobs we can take-up for survival?
5) How is the Garment jobs? My wife is Garment technologist from NIFT.

If I would have been in your place I would thought houndred times before migrating to Canada from Singapore
Regarding IT jobs we just can't compare Singapore and Canada.My own brother is in Singapore for more than 13 years and considering several facotors(Tax ,Salary,Annual vacation expense to India) my thinking is for a same level job you can save much more in Singapore with world's top disciplined and clean country
It might be my own percepttion but one major difference between USA/Canada and Singapore that I noticed is work cuture.In Singapore and mostly in all High Tech Asian Countries you will be treated as a machine and there might not be ant free time/weekends.In USA/Canada(Might be some exception there)people consider work as fun and enjoy their weekends

I would advise you to first do a bit of research on the site, many of the questions may already have been answered multiple times.
In regards to your main question, there is really no average time-frame in which you can find an I.T. or any other job, its a rather naive question unfortunately. I mean I can tell you "about 3 months", but I wonder how that means anything in your specific case.. I know people who have found it in 4 weeks and I know people who're still looking after a year and a half. There are a lot of factors that determine this timeframe including the "luck" factor that you have no control over.
The I.T. market here isn't that bad, but its no cakewalk. For newcomers it is difficult to get in, but once you do get in, you can move up quite quickly if you have the right mind-set. Intially you might find that nobody even replies to your resumes and they seem to vanish into a black hole, but have heart into the fact that this happens to everybody, even people who've been here for a long time. You may also encounter the Canadian experience catch-22. But despite these, you will get that odd-call and the key is to capitalize on this, so be extremely well-prepared for any calls you may get.
My sincere advise would be to forget worrying about the time-frame and work very hard and do a lot of research before you arrive. That will help you come up with a better reason for moving than the one you have stated in your last post.

What I intended to know by my question is if it is possible to get a job within one or few months of landing in Canada? with the so many chaos in this forum on the IT jobs, it made me feel that IT is hopeless.
there are lots of discussions on "your overseas experience is nil in Canada".
what I feed by your answer is :
1) You may get jobs within few months after your landing, it depends on
your skills, approach and luck.
2) your overseas experience may be counted, it depends on company
and again luck. It also depends on the company and clients for whom
you have worked.
Pls correct me if I am wrong.
Actually I have been doing R&D since last one year. I have modified my CV and posted on monster.com with having toronto address in it and got excellent response and hit on my CV. I have talked to few of them, but once they come to know that I am in Singapore they stopped further discussion.
One of them suggested me to put my Singapore Tel. no on the CV coz they were not able to contact me.
Finally once I changed my CV and put Singapore Tel. no. on that, there were no response since then.
What I feel is there is good potential on my CV and Skills but I need to be there.
I was worried about whether my overseas experience will be counted?
I will try same exercise once I received my PR.

I.T. isn't "hopeless" in Canada at all. It does not have the same "hope" as say 5 years back but its alive and well. But still, it does not really tell you how much time you'll get the job in, it all depends on you and luck.

When you hear something like this from people, try to apply your own reason. When someone employs you they want to make sure that you have skills to do the job, period. A lot of time, employers are suspicious of your overseas skills because they are aware that overseas experience can be "created", rather than actual, and they don't have the means and the resources to verify this.
The key however is you. How you present yourself and your experience in an interview determines how credible they think you are. If you're able to do this with confidence and clarity, there's no doubt they'll give you a job based on this experience, and I know a few who've gotten this without a problem. I'm not saying that your your Singapore experience will always be welcome with open arms, you'll have to work to make it so. But a lot of times what happens is a candidate who has a lot of experience from India goes to an interview here, does not do very well in the interview itself and then what does he tell friends? Will he say that I kinda bungled up the interview? No, he'll say that Canadians are racist and they don't want to consider my Indian experience. There's ego involved here and the "system" becomes an easy target. So don't believe everything you hear from everybody.

When you land here originally, you'll meet a lot of people in subways and grocery stores etc etc. who'll try to give you an impression that Canada is a "hopeless" country. Brace yourself for this and make sure you're strong enough not to be discouraged by this. Evaluate again your reasons for coming here if you need to, but when you do land here make sure you land with nothing but optimism.
And I can assure you, Canada isn't a "hopeless" country. Its a beautiful country with a lot of nice people and once you make headway professionally here, you won't want to live anywhere else. In my 4 years, the only complaint I have really is the cold winter, but then no place is perfect.

I am 100% convinced by you...this the way exactly I think.
The same stuff told by my friend, who left my company and doing MBA in toronto. He said "IT is not very good but not hopeless either"
I am damn sure that my IT experience will be counted in Canada, coz I worked with the clients who are well known in Canada.(They are fortune US companies). Few examples : Moodys,UBS etc...
