Should you carry cancelled Indian Passport every time you go back or they make some sort of entry of this cancellation in their database from prior visits.
If you don't have Surrender Certificate then talk to VFS. Most likely they will ask you to carry canceled passport along. Immigration at the airport will do the needful. I'll know in January if this is the norm n process.
If you have Surrender Certificate then you don't need to carry it. If I were you, I'll carry it but won't show - unless Immigration ask.
PS: In any case, get this information verified at consulate. The information provided here is not first hand.

You need to show your passport and visa (OCI/PIO/Visa). There is no harm in carrying cancelled Indian passport but no need to show unless asked by immigration (chances are less they will ask unless they have some issue with visa).
This is what based on my experience for the last three visits this year (twice they even didn't ask for my OCI card (just looked at OCI stamp on my passport while entering the country) but they always ask for OCI card while leaving - don't know why?).
I guess procedure remain same but you want to confirm with Embassy.

I have never carried my expired and cancelled Indian passport and have never been asked for it. If you just want a bit extra peace of mind, just carry it with you and show if asked for.
