Since I have almost settled, some nuisances I have to deal with:

1. Our income tax refund in India is taking its own time. My wife's refund was less by abt Rs. 6k. When checked, the tax folks messed up the TDS amount. Had to give a letter and all the copies of the papers again. I have not seen my refund so far. This is for the financial year 2007-08. Tax office was a sight by itself. 15-20 people surrounding one tax officer. Rest u can imagine how things are done

2. Footpaths have become parking lots. More cars, less parking space. So footpaths are the automatic choice leaving the pedestrians in a lurch.

3. Saw on the news (by mistake) the income tax folks have raided the onion wholesale traders to see why pricess are high. Still trying to figure out why IT dept is dealing with onion traders. That's the job of Agri dept and Food and Civil supples dept. Imagine CRA agents raiding a wholesale vegetable traders in Canada to determine why the prices are high.
btw onions are still high as compared to last month.

I am trying to avoid watching news on the tv and reading newspapes reg politics, scams, etc. Why bother. There is lot of cricket going on. WC2011 will start next month. Had a great time watching both the test matches from early morning 5.00 am till evening. Overall things are ok.

IMO do not try to change/complain the system if you want to be happy. Even in developed country like Canada it is very hard for the people to complain and make any change in the system. Can you make a change in Health care.education system in Canada. The answer is No

As long as you remain ahead of inflation and financial strong, there is no country like India to enjoy. With money you can buy anything in India. You should start adopting that system as you did in NA when u came here.

It might just be an issue of changed mindset/cultural shock. The same thing that happens when an immigrant comes to Canada.

I hope that within couple of years, you will be a part of system and the issues you have mentioned will hardly be an issue for you.

I believe onions are an important indicator of inflation in India. On another note, I recently read about the need to import coconuts in Sri Lanka which in the past had abundant supplies from within. This was causing a major concern.

So, price indicators of staples might be triggering action from the powers to be.

Next year there will be over supply of onions. This happened so many times with potatoes and I remember that one time farmers used over grown potatoes to fill the vacant lots. This price hike is not going to be permanent.

Toilet blues for rail commuters

MiD DAY finds lavatories at railway stations across the Western and Central network raise a stink; most urinals cannot be used and are the source of several diseases

Travelling by train and need to answer nature's call? Well, you are in for some bad luck as MiD DAY found out that most of the railway stations have no proper facility of a toilet and if the station does have a restroom, there is a 90 per cent chance that you will need to hold your breath because of the foul odour the restroom emits.
