Hi CD friends,
My wife is suffering from acute sciatica pain, no medicines is working to help her , (I tried the emergency treatment route )at the York region hospital, where after 6 hours of wait 1 Dr came , injected her some heavy pain killer, prescribed Morphine and some other drug , for 2 days , and let us go home .
1 day with those medicines at home my wife now cannot even get up on her own, leave aside any relief whatsoever, she has not slept from last Monday since her attack started, I tried with my family Dr , he prescribed another set of medicine .

Is there any suggestions from anyone on to how best to deaL with such medical conditions?

She is actually not fit to stay home alone , she may fall down going to washroom , she tries to avoid going , this may develop in to some new complications, it is extremely frustating and helpless situation .
Thanks for your support as always ,looking forward for your replies.

Hi peacock1,

I am sorry to hear about this unexpected ailment faced by your wife. I know how tough it is when one of the main family members becomes bedridden.

Couple of recommendations from my side:

1) make immediate arrangments to see if there is a nanny help available to take care of her.

2) contact your family members In India and arrange to have a relative visit you to get some help.

3) I have heard of back-operation as a long term solution for sciatic pains. I will make some enquiries in regards to this.

Please keep us updated.

kind regards,

Srini
Ajax.

I would suggest to make an apointment with Dr Mewa for second opinion, I'm confident you will find solution quicker than you expect. He is available on SAT afternoon only, may not get apoint soon but ask your family doctor to make apontment or you personally drop by with wife's reports and request the doctor, he may consider urgency and give you chance.

Don't forget your medical insurance card, if you have one, he may prescribe and give midicine/injection same day.
Wish you good luck.

I had the same thing. I was not even able to rise from the bed. Made a 911 call and called the ambulance and went to the emergency. The doctor was pissed off that I called the ambulance but I donot know how he expected me to walk in when I could not stand up.
They gave me 3 doses of morphine, tylenol 3 and told me that I have to leave in 30 mins. as they need the bed. For the morphine tylenol to take effect, I waited for 3-4 hours in the hospital. After 4 hours, I was able to walk in a very pained way and with a major limp. I took a taxi home. I knew that if I lay down and slept, I would not be able to get up.
The Tylenol 3/Oxycotlyn worked and the pain gradually went down. I slept for 2 days in a sitting position in the couch for the fear of the pain coming again.
On Monday (after 1 day) I went to a physio. To cheat me of my medical insurance (private) I was sent by the receptionist to the Chiropractor. He told me that he could rectify this and made some adjustment in my bones ( took $ 100 first appointment). The useful thing he told me is to cut down on the oxyies / Tylenol 3 as I could become addicted due to the pain which I did. Chiropractor does not gives any excercises but he personally adjusts the bones. For each visit I pat $ 40. Next day I was given appointment to meet the physiotherapist. Now this guy took $ 140 in the first visit but told me that he could find nothing wrong with me (but by this time, my pain had already gone). He taught me some excercises and told me to do it at home.
The major factor is to sleep on hard surfaces and not on spring matress.
They clearly told me that they will exaust my private medical insurance in a month and then they told me that I must pay from my own pocket and that if I did not I would be in serious health trouble. I left them after going to them for a week. Every week they would call me but I would pretend that I was o a "project" in USA. evntually they stopped calling me.
This is the reality in Canada. Many people will say that it will be even worse in India.
To conclude :
There is no right or wrong answer. I highly doubt if any canadian doctor can find out the real problem. Mostly advise in Canada is only to exaust your insurance and hence I am not in a position to advise.
Peace and Love

First - You should consult a doctor or nurse or even physiotherapist about Sciatica pain management. Most of us here are not doctors or medical professionals at all and you have to be careful.

Having said that, I have suffered with sciatic pain for many years. I have tried chiropractic and physio treatment. Physio in my experience has been much more effective however others will find chiro helps them more.

Surgery is often seen as a possible solution for sciatic or disc herniations but studies have shown that its less than 50% effective. It can make things worse. I was taught this by the chief medical doctor for the insurance company that I work for.

I dont think there is a 'cure' either, but you learn to manage it. Honestly I was in a very bad state a few years ago and could not walk without pain. The episode you describe ur wife is in is like an acute attack or inflammation. Try heat backs on the back area where the pain is or where she is the most stiff. Gentle massage. lots of heat.

I began going to a hot Yoga studio for a couple of years and have found since that time that I have had no sciatic pain. They teach you certain asana's that help sciatic nerve pain.

I was in a similar situation, 4 years ago, simply could not move, used to move around with support of hand , took some over the counter pain killer, no remedy, then called some heath telephone number, one doctor came home he said its lumbago and told me to see the physiotherapist

so my wife helped me to go to a physiotherapist, what helped me most is the heat they gave, some kind of electric shock, which make you feel comfortable, I guess you should see a physio, you may have a major problem at hand if it's something to do with the disc otherwise she should be fine with physio.
