The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the launch of a new Mentoring program for New Immigrants. This Group Mentoring Program will be conducted in association with JVS Toronto and TRIEC.

This program aims to connect mentees – internationally trained Indo-Canadian newcomers, with mentors – successful Indo-Canadian professionals. The mentors will be drawn from the pool of professional talent available within the Chamber’s membership.

Objectives of the program

- To help new skilled newcomers by matching them with a mentor with similar background
- To assist them with developing their professional networks and with making educated career decisions
- To increase understanding of Canadian workplace culture and the reality of transferring professional designations
- To strengthen the knowledge of community resources and linkages to settlement services, skill development, job search resources, language and literacy programming among other services

Advantages of the program

Mentee Benefits

- Increased self-knowledge and awareness
- Obtain strategic tools for ongoing career development and success
- Enhance communication skills
- Develop professional etiquette
- Identify talents needed in the Canadian workplace
- Build their network for work and career success
- Become employed in their field of expertise

Mentor Benefits

- Increased self-knowledge and self awareness
- Optimize coaching and mentoring skills
- Build leadership excellence
- Dialogue with and learn from the experiences of internationally trained people
- Share knowledge and wisdom and explore new ideas and perspectives
- Learn about and contribute to the community
- Recognition from ICCC

Action plan

We will launch the program with a pilot project between March 2011 and May 2011, for a selected group. The pilot program will comprise one mentor and 6 mentees in a sector specific mentoring group. Once the group is matched, they will take part in 5 mentoring sessions over a course of 4 months. The main program will commence in June 2011.

If you are a new immigrant or a seasoned Canadian professional, we encourage you to be a part of this program.

To apply to the program, either as a mentor or a mentee, download the forms at http://www.ICCC.ORG/MENTORING" rel="nofollow">LINK

Send the completed forms to, or fax to 905-279-2417.

Four years ago, I had put forward the same question on a national forun at a conferance in Regina where I was representing professional immigrants...........

and the answer unfortunately was very disappointing.

Seems like all these programs follow Rogers and Bell - all the incentives and discounts are only for the new customers - not for the loyal ones!:(

If they are really interested in helping immigrants, they should help old and new immigrants alike.

This specific program is meant for new immigrants who have come to Canada in the past 3 years, as that is the stipulation of the government grant. However, we may launch a program in the future for not-so-new immigrants.

That is exactly what every "Mentoring" organisation is doing for so many years - whether it be TRIEC, or Maytree Foundation or whatever - not really wanting to help the country but taking the grants from the government.

Why don't these organisations realise that the need was felt because Many Many new immigrants could not get into proper life/career and they settled for whatever was finally available - and so these people are the ones who are still struggling since they never got a good start and what they deserved?

Instead of saying that the government grants are given only for new immigrants, why don't they MENTOR the govt that it is the not-so-new immigrants who need more help since they are the ones who are soon going to become a burden to the state and their own families when they are not able to pay their bills, having finished all their savings and the strength in fighting the system. For a person who has been away from his original career path for 5 years or more, the question is not what he could do or is capable of doing - but in practical life, the thought is, if he could not do it in last 5 years, he really is not good (and that means all the immigrants who struggled because of the system problem, and not due to lack of strength and abilities).

And if ICCC is really interested in helping immigrants - why stick to a govt sponsored program? Why not start something of their own - there would be enough donors both in cash and in kind within the organisation?

The same story for the organizations like Career Bridge. They only take in people who are new or less than 2.5 (something like that) years old to the country. When I inquired about my wife who's been struggling to get into her profession for the last 3 years, their response was mostly negative.

These organizations are nothing but a bunch of 'let me fill my coffers first' people. They get paid handsomely by the Govt. but I highly doubt their policies. But hey, they won't make it good for a not-so-new immigrant as at the end of the day the 'handsome grants' are flowing in from our own tax money.

Immgration is a darn good business these days!
