Even Indian consulate has to ' process, pay salaries of commission, lease, officers in Canadian dollar and as per labor standards'. Satyagrahas for this once in a lifetime 200$?? I don't understand why there are no satyagrahas for SSN payments deducted every paycheque. Most of the desi's coming to US stay there for some years and return. Most of them cannot claim SSN benefits but have to pay for SSN. Its everywhere.

I guess it is time to increase surrender certificate/OCI/PIO fees as inflation is high in India.

Shaz > How about increasing the surrender certificate fees to $275 per person and OCI fees to $500. This looks reasonable.

Actually the reason we dont get SSN is our social security system in india, US provides SS benefits if there is reciprocal agreement..

Indian government has realized the loss and was a few years back trying to negotiate with the US. i dont think it made much headway..

I dont know how American govt treats with its residents and citizens on residency fees but one thing i know and many research and Human Development Index stats says that people from entire World wants to live in Canada. But also there are some limitations of every country which I believe that can be resolved only in democracy. Even Canada charges some "horrible fees" for example 10K for burial and cremation charges and US was also known for high Medical Insurance premiums which a Gandhi follower Obama has won it. But I don't oppose all of it because it is properly accounted (unlike some Indian administration fees which are not accounted many times and scams which take place every fortnight)
If you guys are aware that Canada, US and India are democratic countries, so the policies, people and leaders are elected by choice of its masses. If there are 2 or 3 people on a website who wants to increase OCI fees based on someone's salary or inflation rate things may not work like that in democracy (I hope no one in this discussion room is from Libya ;) or Arab world). And if someone has read about Gandhi he always fought for unjustified taxes and fees because those taxes were charged from South East Asian people and used in benefit of Colonial empire and not for the benefit of its colonies. So I cannot pinpoint whose mentality is incorrect in this if someone doesn't understand this.
And Canada never discriminates in any fees based on race or nationality . I cannot help if some countries charge it but I will always oppose those fees which are charged based on nationality or race whether its India or Europe. I hope things will also turn around for that matters soon.
If you are really concerned and aware of India you might be aware that even today 35% of people in India is still below poverty line. That just shows a failure despite double digit percentage point growth in GDP, which western media always highlights it every-time they get a chance. Take for example the actors of Slumdog Millionaire who became well known "media targets" for their poverty when the film got Oscars.
@ Ash, if you want to pay $500 I would ask you to do that, I don't know Indian government accept donations. But at the end its the democracy which wins..I am just assuming you all are mature enough to understand all this what i said.
I would end this by a quote of Gandhi "Be the change that you wish to see in the world"

Thanks Shaz for your suggestions. I just come to know from your post that India have 35% poverty and therefore sent a mail to Overseas Affairs Minister to increase the surrender fees to $1,000 and OCI fees to $2,500 as India needs to reduce poverty. NRIs are not vote bank and I hope they will consider to increase these fess so apply for surrender certificate/OCI as soon as possible.

I would like to suggest please go in front of mirror and repeat the words u have quoted.. only after that will u realize that paying 200$ for surrender cert is nothing compared to the cost of the big screen tv or the shiny new car or the vacations ppl are able to afford even on minimum wage jobs..
