Just trying to make up my mind between rouge and highlander.
2 adults with a 3 yr old.
Local commute mainly.10-15 kms daily.
Please share your thoughts.

It depends on what you are looking for. Toyota is a better brand and Rogue (2009 model) had some known CVT related problems. The 2011 Highlander is very good - free from recalls. I own it (4 cylinder model) and I am very happy with it so far.
I think Rouge is crossover and Highlander is SUV.
If you are looking for 4 cylinder then better go for RAV or CRV than highlander.

Agree - Highlander would compete more with Pathfinder or Pilot

Why? The 4 cylinder highlander has enough power - and especially for the family size the OP is having. Also, better fuel economy than its 6cylinder version. This highlander is good for you if you are looking for more space (as compared to the RAV4 or CRV) and if the Van is too big for you.

the Rogue is actually a very small car.
It looks big from the outside but actually it is very small.
try sitting in the back seat....you will get cramps soon.
also unless you fold the rear seats they is hardly any trunk space for storing, like even for your weekly groceries.
if you want a cross over, the Caliber is much better value.
it has more room at the back and the rear seats go completely flat.
it is cheaper than Rogue and your insurance will be cheaper too.
Highlander is obviously much more expensive and premium.
if you wanna spend that much money might as well consider the Tucson, Journey or Equinox.
you will get much better value for money.

what will happen if you put car engine in Honda Pilot. It will give you more internal space with less power in the engine....I have seen performance of 4 cyl Highlander. It sucks. These trucks are heavy and you do not need 4 cyl engine fo these type of vechile.
Honda Pilot is 6 cyl but uses 4 or 6 cyl power depending on conditions but for initial start it runs on 6 cyl.
