How long it takes for the wife to get PR status after marrying a canadian citizen? I met a girl yesterday who is married to a canadian citizen. The guy is in GTA. I am told that its almost 1.5 yrs. She and her parents are wondering when she would join him. I have no clue abt immigration issues. Can someone please tell how long it takes to get PR after marrying a citizen? Does she have to go via visitors visa?

Usually it takes 6 months but in some cases if they reject the file on the basis of some suspect or third party informations then it can take about 3 years I know a person whose case was settled after 3 years and everything was perfect in his case but somebody misguided to CIC and he was told to prove the marriage and after that the procedure was lengthy.

Can she not get her husband to call CIC and find out the status or the processing times (or alternately look it up online???). From your words above - my first thought was - is this marriage genuine? I dont mean from your friends side either..

Seems there is some Problem:

The initial process to sponsor spouse ( who lives out of canada) should be over in less than two months ..... later the VISA depends on the visa post (country). If it is India, it takes around 6 months. So the total process should be over in 8 months.

Morning_rain may be right.

I spoke to the girl and her dad yesterday. As I undsertand, the file is under investigation due to suspected fradulant marriage. I dont know how these people came to know abt it. Her dad was not forthcoming at all. I could sense that something is not right in the whole process. The girl says that her hubby is a citizen, but has not seen his passport. Its only his word. The guy's parents are saying to teh girl that their son is handling everything, they dont much abt the process. They lived in Canada for abt five years, came back and settled in India.

Normal processing time for spousal is 6 months to 18 months..

usually 18 months timeline is for applications that undergo scrutiny.

If u are a punjabi chances are that ur application will be scrutinized due to a spate of fraudulent applications coming from Punjab.

Usually 2nd marriages are also scrutinized if the 1st marriage was also through a spousal

In sufficiently documented marriages and improperly filled applications can also get scrutinized.

Applications getting scrutinized is the risk of any immigration application.

Girls side tends to panic after 3 to 6 months which is also normal.. i have faced it in-spite of having doing everything in my hands.

I think u should just let the girls side know the facts and move on because a lot of times things are out of control of both sides.
