I had received two cheques totaling about $180 from Bell Canada (overpayment I did in Canada by mistake) that I submitted to SBI in India. The cheques are cleared but I got $10 less. SBI has taken out their commission and postage in Rupees. When enquired, I was told by SBI that the bank in Canada has charged $10 for clearing the cheques. This is the first time I have heard about it. I can’t remember which bank name the cheques had from Bell.
Is it common to charge for clearing cheques like this? Is it something else?
