Aiming for a piece of moon cost them dear
U B Umanath, Hyderabad, DHNS:
Considering buying land on Mars, Venus and the moon? Drop the idea as it is nothing but a con game, say the Hyderabad cyber police who are inquiring into several complaints on such gimmicks occurring in the state capital.
Cyberabad police commissioner Ch D Tirumala Rao, warns people to “be cautious of such fraudulent activities like buying plots on the moon, Mars and Venus.
“How can any one give you a piece of land without any no objection certificate to that effect,” wonders a cyber sleuth.
According to the cyber police, nearly 2,000 people in the state are alleged to have purchased such plots online and paid huge sums in dollars to the websites. “This is an offence under the Information Technology Amendment Act. If any buyer lodges a complaint, we can register a case,” says CID (cyber crime) additional superintendent U Ram Mohan.
The cyber crime police have advised the public not to fall prey to the lunar real estate fraud and lose money. Most buyers have also complained that even the details of their credit and debit cards were stolen in such deals. The piece of paper they have received in the form of certificate is worthless.
No legal sanctity
But none of them has any legal sanctity as there are no such legal entities registered with the United Nations. There are several sites like Lunar Registry, Moon Estates, Moon Shop, Lunar Landowner, Out of this World Gifts and Mars Shop selling plots on the moon, Mars and Venus. Rajeev V Bagdi (now Rajzeev V Baagree for reasons of numerology) of Hyderabad is the owner of five acres on the moon he purchased from the e Lunar Republic Interactive which issued him the ‘Registered Claim and Deed for Lunar Property’ on July 27, 2003.
According to the manual registration, his registration has been recorded in the registries at Paris and New York and legally certified.
Similarly, Anish Dasgupta of Kolkatta, a travel consultant, stumbled upon a website, which claimed to be the ‘official website of moon’ and bought two acres through the organisation using his credit cards some time ago. The location of his land on the moon is tract 34, latitude 13.5-degree south and Longitude 47.5-degree west.
There is a comment by Michelle somebody at the end of the article threatening a lawsuit for an alleged libel. It would be fun to have her organization go to the court in India.
